When Umber became to old and rambunctious for Luna to care for, the princess sent her adopted daughter to Twilight's School for Gifted Ponies because she decided that it would be the best environment to raise the young pony. Umber wasn't very happy that it would be difficult to see her Moon(Mom) and everytime Luna visited Umber tried to convince her to take her home or she tried to stow away. Once Umber was old enough to join the programs at TSGP (10) she began to meet new friends and warmed up to the place. Now the young mare doesn't really want to go back to Canterlot but she still tries to stow away with Luna because of tradition.For the first few years, Umber felt like Twilight was trying to take Luna's place in her heart and she wasn't going to have any of that. Even though Umber was completely aware that Luna wasn't her mother, she was still raised by the princess so she treats her like a mother figure. This is also because she doesn't remember her real mom. Anyway, she eventually she warmed up to "Auntie" Twilight because she is her "family" but they still butt-heads every now and again. (But to be real, who doesn't butt-heards with Umber?)
