Will somebody please tell me... why my wishes never come true?F is for Folken from 天空のエスカフローネ, The Vision of Escaflowne. I know in my self-made rules I said no anime, but how, how, HOW could I skip Escaflowne? I decided to make up for my rule breaking by straying from anime style and making him more cartoonish.
I don't even know where to begin with this explanation. Saw it on YTV when I was in grade 9 and fell in love with it the way I had never loved a series--cartoon, anime or otherwise--before. It was the anime that launched my passion for anime that spanned high school. To this day I remain perhaps the only fan of the EDITED dubbed version of Escaflowne, as I felt the music choices were better (and yes, I liked all the music they made up for it). I have to stop here because I could ramble on and on about how much I love this series and how much the ending STILL brings tears to my eyes, but I think I'll leave it there and sum it up by saying I was passionate enough about this series at 14 years old to teach myself HTML and make a website for it... during a time when dialup internet was still the only kind around and before Google was a verb.

I was thinking of you when I was watching some scenes looking for good shots of Folken in this outfit. I ended up watching the ending on Youtube with a lump in my throat and remembered watching it together in the apartment and while I was waiting to see if you're get red-eyed *I* started feeling tears on my cheeks. And it was like the 50th time I'd seen the ending!
His death was lame. Actually it was really, really lame! The sword breaks off with enough power that the tip not only breaks off but lands deep enough to bypass his ribcage, pierce his hard, and cause him to land in a giant pool of blood? I get that there was the destiny-action-reaction stuff but there were other ways to do it... the green stuff keeping Dornkirk alive could have been toxic, there was enough machinery there that he could have electrocuted himself. The sword tip was a stretch.
Oh god yes Paul's voice is sexy. And from the brooding hot characters he's played you'd think he'd be equally serious IRL but he's a total goofball. With a penchant for dirty jokes

I can't say I find the movie confusing but it's just so incredibly disjointed... trying to cram a 39ep series into 26 was a feat that worked completely in their favor but trying to cram 26 into a movie while changing around characters and plot was just not their greatest plan. I still enjoy it but really it's only becase of my Escafan heart that I do. Thanks for the compliment

Esca is my favorite TV show of all time. I still love it, even after almost 11 years.

There are three versions... subbed, uncut dubbed, and dubbed edited. The edited version is 23 eps instead of 26. Eps 1-9 aired on FOX in America in 2000 and all 23 on YTV in Canada from 2000-01. If you've only seen the uncut you'll probably hate the cut but for me it was the first version I ever saw and I like some of the changes they made. The original has a lot of silent music-less moments that the cut filled with music which gave it a very different kind of emotion.

I own the entire series on DVD, so I've seen all 26 episodes. But I first saw the Foxaflowen version. Honestly the only difference that I remember is that Fox didn't air the first episode. (Stupid Fox, ruins all the good stuff.) There were a few years between me watching it on Fox and buying the entire series so I didn't even know there were any edits for a long time. I do remember that I liked the Fox intro song... That was different, more techno-y, right?

Yeah on YTV in canada they aired the first ep which was 100% uncut except for the slap.
I can't remember if I ever went into details about the cutvs the uncut on my website, I know it was deinitely one of the things I had at least planned for it. There are other sites though that detail it. The summaries on the site are all specifically for the cut version though and especially as the later episode came I think I got really specific. So if I left something out, it wasn't in the episode.
The FOX intro was definitely more techno-y but I found it had enough in it to project something of Escaflowne. Actually I found all the FOX-created music really suitable throughout the series, specifically they had a little 7-chord jingle that had a dozen variations that they'd play every now and then throughout the series but it was never a complete piece and then, and THEN, in the last scene in the forest, after the hug, the music goes silent and all that plays is that little 7 chord jingle before the light comes and then the music goes all out and trasforms it into a really, really beautiful piece. It's hard to explain without example. I ripped the final edited episode to DVD so when I get back to Canada I'll put it up on Youtube or something and link you.
There are a few other esca pieces in my gallery. My own personal favorite is possibly the beige one titled "Silent Conversation". In the older part of my gallery and maybe in the scraps I have more stuff but it's really, REALLY not great and is mostly related to two fanfics I wrote in HS.

Funny that you mention 'Silent Conversation,' that is in fact in my favorites and I LOVE IT.
I have never had the opportunity to watch the YTV cut version, though I have heard that it was way better than the Fox version. But like I said, I don't remember the Fox version at all, so yes, if you do get a chance to put the cut version up, I would be most interested. *Nods*

To be honest I really wanted to use V for it but another character needed the spot and I din't have anyone for F. Allen was going to be A for a while too but again, gave it up for the F.

YAAAAAAAAAAY FOLKEN!!!! I LOOOOOOVED Folken...he was my favourite character and I went positively LIVID when he died T.T ARRRG I really need to get my DVD's back from my friend...I wanna watch this again SO bad.
I also...btw...am still a fan of the edited version as well! The music was great...but the voice dubbing was AMAZING as well, and they did a good job editing it and keeping it as close to the original as possible. Escaflowne has to be one of the very few AMAZING dubs I've ever seen.
If I could fave this a million times I would!

Folken was among my faves too. Not gonna lie, at least 75% of his appeal for me was his dub voice.
I also thought the editing was decent for the amount it took out. There were some scenes they shortened or removed that I wish they hadn't (but it's been a while so I forget which ones) and though I didn't mind they removed the blood from everything there were some scenes where it was necessary (when Van comes back from battle after he joins with Esca and is supposed to be so beat up from it that there is blood dripping OUT of escaflowne was all cut and then it was confusing why everyone was so worried about him, for example.

Haha there were even scenes that were moved around. Like one monologue that Folken gave at the beginning of the series in the edited version was actually near the END of the series in the unedited version. Haha...I know this cause after I got the series on DVD I compared it to the edited version I had taped off the TV. That's how I know they changed and edited out very little of it. All that was really edited out was all the blood...and like one scene just after Hitomi meets Allen and they're at the castle...and someone sees her and asks who she is, and Allen says she's his lover and leans down to kiss her cheek. They cut that scene out.
lol man now I'm wishing I hadn't given my GW tapes that also had all my Esca episodes to Brad...so I can go thru and compare them again. (I've made plans with my friend to get my DVD's back...after like FOUR YEARS XD FINALLY)
