Description Persepolis took 180 years to build. It took much precision and art to get it right.

A Persian treasury official, dressed in the traditional royal robe of the Persians inspects the work of an artist. The sculpture is a six-foot high statue of a bull that will serve as the capital for a 60-foot high structure at the Persepolis palace complex.

Another official stands back and assesses the proportions of the carvings.

Nice surprise this image, sure.
The colours are fantastic and also the scene; I love it because it´s not dealing with kings or greeks (which are the common theme of the achaemenid empire that we are used to see). And the bull is very realistic too; it would be great to find more images like this one.

Persians [2006-04-01 16:39:37 +0000 UTC]

The bull had horns back then, but the bull here was copied from a photograph..

Paleo-King In reply to Persians [2013-11-02 05:26:07 +0000 UTC]

From what I know of the archaeology, the bull's horns were made of metal and most likely gold-plated (the technology for gold plating using electrolyte cell was invented by ancient Persians). So basically there was an assembly line of sculptors to make these bulls with square holes to insert the "root" of the horn and ear pieces, which were iron bolts similar to the ones used to clasp the stone blocks of the palace floor together. The whole palace was basically pre-fabbed and the parts were mass-produced/mass-carved and some parts were pre-designed, paid for and then transported from very far away. This modular technology was totally unknown to either the Greeks or the Babylonians. The only nation at the time that had similar level of construction methods was China.

The real novel thing at the time is that every worker was paid for their work in gold, and there are tablets that still exist preserving the payroll records. None of them were slaves or forced labor.

It's a nice copy. Good job.

Do you know how old that photograph is? (The one from which the bull was copied)

udrite [2006-04-01 16:20:20 +0000 UTC]

A bull? Where are the horns? I mean, were the bulls horn-less in that time? How old is this?
