Description Full body sketch of the "xenocetacean".

This animal has changed in shape quite considerably since the first unsure attempts, but now it seems I have reached "the" point. Now All what's left to do is think about some slight variations of the head and fin shape, the size range and coloration.

Let me know what you think.

Giant filter-feeders are planned, they will most likely resemble these "xenoporpoises" in the general body plan, only with absent head crest and a very small or absent dirsal fin in the back, but I sill have to develop a decent head design for them.

xenocetaceans few could exist?

PeteriDish In reply to Dragonthunders [2012-03-18 23:40:30 +0000 UTC]

I think they would be no less common than cetaceans on earth before people started to hunt them. There will be many species distributed worldwide.

Nicely streamlined, and familiar while still being alien. I like this latest incarnation of these.

Thank you so much!
Yeah, I think i probably should start doing colored versions of them or start sculpting! I haven't sculpted for a long time now! I fot frustrated from the cryptomantis, all that is missing are the foreleg membranes but it just wouldn't work out... =/

PeteriDish In reply to OblivionJunkey94 [2012-03-18 21:54:08 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... I hope I get it done to re-gain my sculpting dedication. those aquatic creatures are just barrels with fins, it should be much easier to sculpt them!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OblivionJunkey94 In reply to PeteriDish [2012-03-18 21:58:00 +0000 UTC]

Well I think they should be fairly easy to sculpt what color will they be?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to OblivionJunkey94 [2012-03-18 22:02:44 +0000 UTC]

That's what i will have to decide yet. probably grey or tan with some black or buish tones thrown in. I'd like to experiment with some unusual patterns to make then "different" from earth's cetaceans, and I'd like to experiment adding a few vibrant-colored features to certain species.
Remember that I am just "fleshing out" the major body plans, i haven¨t given a deeper thought to the exact species within those body plans and the vatiations within a certain group or coloration.

OblivionJunkey94 In reply to PeteriDish [2012-03-18 22:34:37 +0000 UTC]

Right I see well this specimen hasn't got scales like the river cows so if this is a ocean goer I think it would be light blue or tan the patterns would be interesting

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to OblivionJunkey94 [2012-03-18 22:36:11 +0000 UTC]

Oh the river cow wasn't supposed to have scales! I think of them having generally bare but tough skin, maybe with a lone short hair here and there...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OblivionJunkey94 In reply to PeteriDish [2012-03-18 22:45:55 +0000 UTC]

Oh sorry well I imagine the river cows to be green like some big river fish are they mention to be mammals? Or mammal like?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to OblivionJunkey94 [2012-03-18 22:49:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've written a little bit about the coloration of the river cow, which is probably the only animal I am sure of what colors it wil "wear"
I imagine it olive green with dark tan belly, and with diffused darkish brown stripes on the back and sides, with very dark nrown speckles all over. I imagine the river won't be the cleanest, lots of plant matter flowing in it, mud and stuff, so I wanted it to "blend in".

OblivionJunkey94 In reply to PeteriDish [2012-03-18 23:29:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I get what ya mean when I was fishing last year with my dad I caught a fish called a tench it was about 2ft long strong as he'll and it was a olive green with a lighter green belly

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to OblivionJunkey94 [2012-03-18 23:34:15 +0000 UTC]

Cool! You know, when making alien creatures, i don't think I'm limited to "mammalian" color schemes despite the animals share some superficial similarities, so I decided to give the river cow a more fish-like color scheme.
