Description A somewhat anime inspired blade, basically it is a multipurpose close combat/throw weapon
hexagonal/diamond cross section
L6
hand ground and forged
tape wrap handle
This blade was an experiment, I'm fairly happy with how its coming out, basically is still needs some edge geometry refinement before it goes in for heat treating. The heat treat should be fairly straight forward assuming I can gather the needed information on admirals L6. It may be that I need to quench the L6 in oil, which means that I need to get a lot of oil for the katana, which is kind of a pain, because commercial oil quenches are expensive. But we'll see, this knife is definitely going to be sold if it makes it to finish. (aka not lost in heat treat)

yes, l6 is an oil hardening steel and as sstheblacksmith said, any kind of oil works.  i have to add, just make sure it's around 120° or the temperature difference will keep it from hardening properly.

This looks like a ghetto kunai, you know in a good way.

also its not technically a kunai without a ring on the pommel, its more of a throwing/push-dagger type knife, but you could probly call it a kunai and no one but perfectionists like me would care

Interesting. I like acctualy like the somewhat dulled color look. Makes it look used. XD I like that lol. Nice though.

Thank you, hopefully when I finish it it will look even better. the lines are too sleepy because of the lack of polish, not to mention that the symmetry isn't there yet.

but I can see the rough trend of it.

Of all your blades (so far) I like this one the best. It's neat. I like how old it looks, almost as if it were something you might see in a museum (well, except for the wrap. ) You really did a good job on it; keep up the good work!

L6 pretty much has to have an Oil quench, I'm afraid. e__e
You CAN get away with a hot brine solution, and that would be good for a Kat with a clay coat/differential heat treat. But for general use, go oil. Even for katana, it would be playing on the safe side -Howard Clark uses an oil quench for his L-6 superkats, and they're the finest *performance* daito in the world.

Way back when, when I was just starting out and didn't know anything about steels, I shattered an L-6 gladius quenching it in water. *headsmack!*

what kind of handle treatment will you be giving this?

very traditional handle, wood tsuka, same and silk ito.

Ah, I've never seen Naruto.

When I saw it, the lines and shape of the blade struck me as being *particularly suited to bronze hilt furnature. A jeweler's wax blank carved out like a jain's pommel and guard, investment cast... pretty.
But that would probably be overkill for a weapon that, iirc, was originally a garden trowel. XD

my mistake i thought you meant the kat. i think that i may actually use a leather or tape wrap. The Naruto kunai are the ones that I'm loosely modeling this knife on.

Gorgeous! I love the smooth lines and symetry of it. Quite a lovely blade.

Thanks, there is still a lot of work that needs to happen. Basically the symmetry isn't perfect yet, and the lines are a little sleepy, something that i need to correct. This blade is also not heat treated yet. L6 is a strange alloy, for someone without commercial heat treating machines and tools, it may prove to be a bit much. So, I'm gathering information before I risk losing the piece.

Sounds like a goal. I'll see what I can do. What I was thinking was a technique called mosaic damascus, you can cover the entire blade in a design, like, pawprints for example, which is something that I've been wanting to do for a long time. But I need to take a trip to boston to make the stuff because I need a power hammer to keep everything clean enough for that. So, well see what happens. I keep you posted, that might be something that I can do over the summer.

That looks pretty deadly. *looking I can't fit that into my bra.... I'm going to stick with you and your work so I can better understand what it is that you do and the terms and whatnot that you use. Lookin forward to what you're doing next my frien.

Thanks for the interest, really makes the work worthwhile. Things may slow down a bit as far as new stuff. That bowie needs to get read to go eventually. I got some rings that I'm going to turn in the next few weeks, and I have a custom knife I need to start and finish by next month (oi!) other than that, things should just get finished, and polished (which takes for bleeding ever) but then I should have a fair assortment of deadly weps. Are you interested in a small dagger, I was planning on making a few anyway, if thats something you have some ideas on, let me know.

A dagger? Oh that's cool. Errr...can't carry it around eh? How about something with a wolf or staduskmoon on it?
