I never use any reference. I mainly start by scribbling.
Thanks for your kinds words 
I create my brushes by scanning some experiment "ink on paper shapes"
I like to use different medium on the paper (wood stick, sponge ...)
Using that scans as brushes on photoshop, gave a cool traditional look to the picture
