They are generally solitary but at certain times of the year they will hang together. Usually in the fall though this spring there was a very large grouping visible from the road. Our local paper had a photo of about twenty. And of course the cows and calves stick together until the calf is a year or two old.

I'm actually not close. I was parked on the side of a road with my window rolled down, using a telephoto lens. Which is why this moose is not paying any attention to me whatsoever. Just as it should be. I don't like to disturb animals any time of year, but especially in the winter.

You can't tell from the pic, but snow levels are way down. Temps in fifties last few days. I am over the moon.
