Description Hey everyone! Here's a photo study of Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings (though I believe this is actually from The Hobbit).

Since I've been in the mood to do study pieces, I thought I'd continue, this time studying from a movie still. I've been really enjoying doing these as I think it's great trying to understand color palettes, how light and shadow works, and composition. Also, one of my goals has been to not get too caught up in the details and try and get the mood and feeling quick with as minimal brush strokes as possible. It's a real challenge, but extremely fun and a fantastic learning experience.

And finally for those who are interested this was done as always in Photoshop CS4 in about 1 hour and 5 minutes.

Nice work! I find it fascinating to study the differences between how a person looks in a regular photo and in a movie still. It's amazing how those subtle differences in lighting, composition, etc. can work to make a larger-than-life image of a character.

Yes all the texture comes from a brush
