For as much as I adore dollhouses I had never actually worked on one before, outside of like... Barbie dollhouses that Mom put together for me, you know? I'm pretty sad my younger self was too cool for those barbie houses, I would love to have them today for photo ops.
Anyway, a while back I shoved a bunch of these dollhouse kits onto my Amazon wishlist so that I could stare at them and wonder about where I would even put them. This kit comes from this link according to my order history, but now I don't see this specific design listed so... I have no idea.

I was super spurred on by the success of the miniature dollhouse book:
As it turns out... my enthusiasm got a bit squashed, haha. One of the first steps was installing that window and its curtain. It was nottttttttt fun. The pieces were just ever so slightly larger than they needed to be so they would not fit into the frame nicely. The instructions told me to grind the corners down, which also sucked. Then the curtain instructions were like, hoo, I dunno, it wasn't great to follow, and I don't understand why the ribbon had to be cut in half, why not just provide a smaller ribbon? I got way more glue than I ever wanted on my hands making that curtain. By the time the window and curtain were done, I glued the walls into place and felt really... just... what a trudge to get that far. I was about ready to toss it but the lovely DukeWaxeye encouraged me to push on.
The furniture building was also something I didn't enjoy. Real furniture has little divots for things to slot together. This is just pieces of wood to be glued together and hope it goes straight. Really really frustrating. Really a lot of glue on my hands. I didn't enjoy gluing the wood together. I did really like putting the cabinet together though, because the front of it was just one flat piece that I glued more flat pieces to, and then it uses BUGLE BEADS for the handles!! SO CLEVER.
The blue cushions had some interesting instructions. For the thinner ones it was just cut some fluff and then fold the fabric over it. Fine, too much glue on my hands but it was okay, I like how they came out. The larger sofa cushion it had me build a cardboard box, then it wanted me to wrap that box in the fluff, and then wrap that in the fabric. Nobody is gunna be sitting on the little sofa! So I skipped adding the fluff and just glued the fabric right to the box. I skipped making little cushions since it wanted me to actually sew them like with a needle and thread and then glue lace onto them and just, muh, no, no, I don't think they would add and I am done putting glue onto fabric already.
The big pieces out of the way... I actually did start to have fun. As it turns out, I really didn't mind putting the little plants together. It was fairly frustrating at times because of how much reliance there was on glue but overall I like how my plants turned out. I LOVE making the little miniature books! Miniature books are easy and I think I have the high possibility of using my printer to make a lot of them. All you have to have is a strand of pages to accordion fold and a cover. The only problem I ended up having with the mini books for this is that I could not for the life of me get them to stay closed. They opened and stayed open (as you can see on the bench) but I couldn't get them to stay closed nicely enough to go on the shelf. I solved this by tying a bit of wire around them as a set.
Another real cute addition to this whole thing were the seed packets - made simply by cutting out the packet shapes and folding them - no glue or anything else. They're stacked up in a basket on the shelf and honestly I don't know if I'm happy with them being there because you just can't see the cute little seed packets like that. I also love the cute little berry preserve jar. It was a pain in the butt to do because it's basically just a bit of cut tubing with wire around a piece of fabric but MAN IS THAT A CUTE RESULT.
The swing actually swings but honestly I don't know why. If that swing moves the rest of the entire place is going to fall apart.
I really enjoyed making the lanterns for their pure cuteness. The one hanging from the swing is far, far superior to the one on the table in terms of appearance for me, but the table lantern is soooo clever. There's a hole in the table for the light to poke through and then it goes all the way down under the rug and then out the wall. So sneaky. The electrical is... ah... I don't know what to do with it, haha. It's super cool that it exists and I love the feature. But the battery pack is just kinda... flooooating behind the wall? It's not attached to anything but the wires directly. So that doesn't seem ideal. Anyway, I'm really disappointed in my table lantern. It was ridiculously difficult to put all the little wire pieces together and then it wanted me to make a twisty loop for it to hang from and just... nuh.
Besides the pillows I mentioned earlier there's other pieces I ended up not completing or overlooking. There were a few labels I didn't bother attaching, for example. There was a hanging plant for on the swing but I just could not be bothered to bend any more wire into hooks and I looked at it for two nights and went, "yeah no, I'm not making this hanging plant." There were also some slippers? I didn't like those. Oh! There was a plastic cat that came with the kit but it was uhhhh hideous, yeah, maybe it melted in shipping a little, or maybe it had just been lazily molded? I turned it around so we could only see its back but then it was as large as the coffee table. So no. It went away.
Iiiiii loved doing that miniature book but I wouldn't buy another miniature kit like this, at least from this company/seller/etc. The end result is cute and I'm happy with it but getting here was not fun like the book was.

I was already surprised by the little tiny pop-up book, but this is even more surprising because it's more dimensional and realistically made solid!
I wish I had my own place with that sort of area designed that way!

At the moment I am working on my new bedroom-to-be in my family's old house, so hopefully this will be a good start to showing off and practicing my own personal touch to room decorating and furnishing!
