It is popular very much for a long time in Japan.
It is famous that Moomin came over from Northern Europe.
I watched it recently and I came to love it!

They used to show the japanese Moomin animations on Swedish television when I was a kid, and it was always one of my absolute favorite tv shows! The voice actors spoke swedish with a Finish accent (because Moomin is a Finish childrens book character made by Tove Jansson) and it's really cute!

Tove Janson was genious. And I feel myself so mighty, when people talk about Moomins, because Tove was Finn like myself. Too bad she died seven years ago. She was - and still is - my biggest idol.
