Yes, they were about to see Ghost in the Shell.
And double yes! I think the movie is perfect in general and would approve to both of them.

I think you should try to stay as close and true to the character from the Anime / Cartoon / Comic / Whatever / as the original sourse is.
The main charater of Ghost in the Shell IS a japanese woman (who also cleary looks like one in the manga/anime).. so why not take a japanese woman for the real life film - just to stay true to the original idea and story?
I think the film would have been more successful this way. I could understand why many people weren't happy with Scarlet. Just smelled like fanservice for the 'wrong' fans or people who didn't know the Anime at all before.
On the other Hand: I think the cast for Batou was BRILLIANT. The actor (I think he's danish.. he also Plays in GoT <3) looked JUST LIKE Batou. I think Batou is also meant to be japanese/asian - BUT he doesn't really look like it to be honest! xD He's descriced as a 193cm tall man sturdy cyborg. Most asian guys just don't have that kind of Body structure.
Mh.. guess what I'm trying to say is: You should find an actor who looks like character was imagined in the first place. It depens on the character. In the case of Motoko - Scarlet did a good job - she has this cyberpunk feeling at least but they should have taken an asian woman in my opinion.

Seriously, the first panel is so great. I just about died laughing when I first saw it. I feel like this could be something out of the show, you know, one of those expressive anime type scenes from the show. Raven why do you have to doubt yourself. And BB with the best response. "My favorite fangirl is right here." What a sweet way to respond to her. Gotta love the charm from him throughout this entire date so far. Ghost In A Shell reference huh? Why is this so convenient? I just got done learning about Ghost In A Shell for my anime class (Yes there are college level art history classes all about manga and anime). The sad part is that I haven't seen it but with all of the other various manga and anime I have learned about in that class, I feel like I have to watch all of them. There was a lot to take in. Looks like the went to go see Wicked Scary, and even more great references with Wicked Scary and the "visitors." And of course, BB with the oversized junk food. Gotta love it. XD

About the Ghost in the Shell thing.. I like all the adaptions so far (exepct the new live action movie.. haven't seen it yet) but my favorite is the original movie from 1995. It's a masterpiece!
