Description Started this happy fellow onnn....May 1st, I believe.
I'm actually in the process of molding him right now. He's out in the garage with a plaster coat drying.
Unfortunately, like my last mask, I lost the back half.
Aaand I'm not sure if the front half will turn out or not.
Ah well. Live and learn.

See that little bit of silver poking out from under the neck?
Aha, yeah, I'll upload a photo in a moment that'll explain that.

And yeah, his name is Smog.

disgusting and inspiring, I like it!! Reminds me of ratface from Stephen King's, "the Stand." At the end when his face is melted from the radiation? I loved it then and I love it now, just like mr. SMog here!

Nahh. x) You have to be 18 to audition, and I'm only 17.
And even if I WAS 18, you couldn't pay me to go on reality TV.

The only thing I can think of is that the many boils would be serving as anchor points for the mold. Doing half the head at a time would still result in many of the boils being completely encompassed in the mold and thus you wouldn't be able to get it out.
Only way I can think around it is to maybe get a brittle mold, cast it, and smash it off. But no that wouldn't actually help, it would work pouring into and then smashing off, but not for actually creating a mold to work with. Hmm, don't know enough about this to be of actual help, sorry.

how did you cast this with plaster when you've got that rigid gas mask on there?

This looks awesome! I must say I really admire your work.
I've just recently started taking some classes on how to do all of this, and I love it even more now.
Yesterday I actually started sculpting my first prosthetic piece, and I only hope it will look as awesome as yours does.
Good Luck with this piece!

The bubbles undercut maybe little much. U can make it half circle. The latex cast may rip with the bubbles in this case.

That is really awesome lookin' so far...! Is the gas mask bit going to be functional/as-is, or part of the finished sculpt? I'm impressed with the in-progress shot - Can't wait to see how it turns out!

PlaceboFX In reply to Myrcury-Art [2011-05-10 07:50:55 +0000 UTC]

The gas mask will be cast in latex, so it won't be functional, as cool as that would be. xD

Myrcury-Art In reply to PlaceboFX [2011-05-11 13:13:13 +0000 UTC]

Damn, a lot of negative shapes to work with for molding. Silicone or plaster-mold?
I love the idea by the way, its really nice

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PlaceboFX In reply to NorthernBlack [2011-05-10 07:23:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's gonna be interesting. You can't see here, but I actually filled in a lot of his chin underneath the respirator with clay to try and avoid any undercuts, but I'm still not sure if it'll work.
And I'm doing a plaster mold.

NorthernBlack In reply to PlaceboFX [2011-05-10 07:30:05 +0000 UTC]

Wasnt worried about the chin, im worried about the boils really. You can slosh-coat the chin, but the chance of bubbles and air-pockets in the boils is big. But im looking forward to seeing it done

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PlaceboFX In reply to NorthernBlack [2011-05-10 07:47:09 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yeah. x_x I'm a little worried about those too. But I went real slow, with a real thin batch of plaster and a chip brush, so I'm hoping I dislodged any bubbles.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NorthernBlack In reply to PlaceboFX [2011-05-10 08:58:36 +0000 UTC]

It can be done, but it takes a lot of work. When you do the cast, what are you going to make the prosthethic of?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PlaceboFX In reply to NorthernBlack [2011-05-10 09:14:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh it's not a prosthetic. At most, it's a mask, but it was really mostly just for practice. I'll just cast it in regular slip latex.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NorthernBlack In reply to PlaceboFX [2011-05-10 09:35:16 +0000 UTC]

Fair enough. Good tricks for casting it: Wet the mold with water first (use a spray-duster-thing for it) It helps remove the bubbles in the latex

S--F [2011-05-10 07:08:24 +0000 UTC]

That is really cool O: Would you be able to see out of the eye sockets or no?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PlaceboFX In reply to S--F [2011-05-10 07:55:48 +0000 UTC]

No, not unless I cut them out after I cast it in latex, which I just might. This was mostly just for practice.

Aaah, there's nothing like a little bit of gasmask to wake up to in the morning
Shame about the back of it, but it'll probably turn out great anyway.

..btw, I though the headcast broke?
