Description Apparently I have to clarify this.
This is the sculpture, before I cast it. I lost what you see here in the photo to a bad molding process.

Poor thing. Lost it to another faulty mold.
Okay, well actually I think the front half is still okay. I need to clean it out and check. But it really won't be usable, anyway.
It was supposed to be for my gory marionette prop I've been working on. (Doll Factory, anyone?)
I need to figure out what's going so wrong with these two-part molds.

Rest in peace, little one.
I tell you, it just breaks my heart whenever I lose a sculpture like this.

Ah, so it is. Then I trust you've discovered what was going wrong with your molds since then, my mistake.

Even though it wasn't what you wanted or needed, this is pretty neat. Just imagine if someone actually looked like this, with their jaw missing and tounge just flapping around kind of funny and scary at the same time.

airpockets maybe? REAAALLY risky to cast these kind of big sculptures. It takes experience to make one without any air being trapped inside it, otherwise it kind of just explodes.

I know how to deal with air bubbles. It's hard to explain exactly what happened.

That sucks, awesome sculpture you have there. I was scared as shit when I had my big ass sculpture (portrait of myself, school assignment) and I was going to cast it in school. It ended with my class not casting them cos noone wanted to risk it, lol.

Doll Factory indeed, I can practically smell the fog machines. Anything that is missing it's jaw freaks me out.

Do the scratches actually come out okay when they're so plain like that? I imagine their simplicity (just cut with a tool) is hidden when covered in blood and stuff, but it still seems kind of underworked, I don't know. Maybe due to deadlines. A cute character, anyway. (:

If you need some advice on the mold making, I might have some suggestions, if you are interested. Just send me a message and maybe I can help. Otherwise I love the piece, very cool.

I rather like this, even if it's not what you intended. The missing lower mandible and the tongue give it a fantastic sense of both horror and comedy.

Imagine seeing that zombie chasing you with it's tongue wagging out like a happy puppy.

Haha, yes, I watched Face Off. Even if I were old enough to audition (You have to be 18. I'm 17.), you couldn't pay my to go on reality TV. It's just not worth it.

sad, really sad.
Two-part molds are really hard to make.... but if you're interested, I've got a short e-book about mask making where is a really detailed description how to do those molds and what mistakes are made often. If this could help you, I'd send you a download-link.

my guess is that the problem is with undercuts (just by looking at the mouth area), I'd recommend doing a silicon mold. Fantastic sculpture btw

PlaceboFX In reply to WilliamRushing [2011-06-26 08:06:22 +0000 UTC]

Nah, that's not the problem.
