He's happy.
Cheren is your best friend and has been since you were children. You've known eachother longer than you can possibly remember, and he IS your friend.
His entire life's goal, since you were babies, has been to be a Pokemon Trainer and become Champion. It is all he ever wanted.
He's excited, and polite and thoughtful. Losing is not a bad thing, it just is. he'll get better and beat you eventually- right? You're friends, and it was a friendly battle- he isn't angry with you.
Then he mentions strength for the first time.

", stop! We both have a Trio Badge, so let's see which of us is stronger!"
"With my knowledge, I can bring out the strength of my Pokémon!"
"Why do you keep beating me? We have the same number of Gym Badges. We should be equals in strength..."
"I see. So that's how you battle."
"Trainers bring out their Pokémon's strength. Pokémon believe in their Trainers and respond to that. I don't understand what about that makes Pokémon suffer!"
"Hey, . I've been waiting for you to get the Insect Badge. And now it's time to see which one of us is the stronger Trainer!"
"If I can bring out the power of my Pokémon, I can still pull this off and win."

He's lost himself.

Losing didn't mean anything to him until he CONTINUED to lose to you. HE was the one who wanted to train Pokemon all his life. HE was the one who studied and studied and studied- he was the one who knew about items and berries and type advantages. HE was the one who spent hours indoors learning when he could have been out playing- HE was the one who was supposed to be the best, not you. But you beat him anyway, and you KEPT beating him. And suddenly, the only thing that mattered, the only thing that COULD matter, was winning. Being stronger. Being the STRONGEST.
Defeating you.

"! This bothersome bunch doesn't really listen to reason."
"So I can't battle the Gym Leader because of Team Plasma, huh... What a bother."
"Well, I suppose that's fair. But really, we would have looked for Team Plasma even if he hadn't asked. I can get stronger while beating that bothersome bunch... ! I'll go on ahead."
"... Do you think Team Plasma could be in there? I don't like cold places, but we have to check. What a bother."
"Well... Still. Is there anything more important than strength for Trainers, like the Champion said? Oh, I'll never understand just by thinking about it. What a bother. Let's hurry up and check the inside."

Everything bothers him, now.

He never even uses the word bother until Wellspring cave- well past Nacrene city. You already have two gym badges at this point.
And suddenly he uses it constantly.
Nothing is fun anymore. This wasn't what he expected, this wasn't what he wanted. He wanted to step foot into the world and into his journey the best, the strongest. He would breeze through gym without a challenge, and everyone would acknowledge him and how strong he was.
Except no one was watching him.
All eyes were on you, the hero.
He wasn't the hero, he wasn't the main character- just a side character, just another trainer. Your story revolved around you, and so did everybody else's.
And it bothers him. Everything. It isn't right, it isn't supposed to be this way and he hates it. And why shouldn't he?

It doesn't take a genius to see Cheren is not okay.

"Hey, . I just challenged the Gym Leader Burgh. He's a seasoned Gym Leader. He made me work for that Gym Badge! But for me, Bug-type Pokémon aren't much of a challenge. I'm going to keep winning like this against all of the Unova region's Gym Leaders! Then I'll head for the Pokémon League and outperform the Champion! If I do that, everyone will admit what a strong Trainer I am... That will make me feel truly alive..."
"Why? Why can't I beat you?"
"I'm weak"
"What I do with my power... I don't know that answer yet. First, I want to become a stronger Trainer so everyone will acknowledge that power! ... Next time, I will win!""...
