Description Here's a short roughs-to-final look at one of the shots in the Grey Goo "Firmament" trailer.  You can check out the full trailer here:  www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1d1ds…

In this clip, I handled the rough animation and layout, and the initial compositing pass.  Some of the fine folks at Powerhouse Animation handled the background, clean-up, and finishing touches!

(I also boarded and did a portion of the rough animation in the final trailer, as well as some of the backgrounds and compositing work.)

Animated in Flash, backgrounds in Photoshop, compositing in After Effects.

I have a question, when you are adding color to the animation, are you adding it to every individual frame, or are there some cheats which allow you to color easier?

How do work in flash without wanting to tear your hair out?
Do you only do roughs and clean up then move to after effects? For me flash lags like crazy.
Apologies if I'm being too nosy, I don't need to know all your secrets!

Hmm, while Flash is a bit buggy, if typically runs smooth enough for me and the studio I work for. Our main draw is how simple and efficient its timeline is, and how easy it is to sketch something up then jump in to clean-up, along with exporting for After Effects use. That said, Toon Boom is generally considered to be more powerful for traditional animation. Toon Boom is just plagued with a terrible interface and a bad learning curve, so it's difficult to throw new people on it, heh.

I pretty much agree with everything you just said. Hah! flash is so much easier to work with. Toonboom is a total headache, information disappears, the interface feels like a foreign language, files go corrupt...etc.
so a question for working In flash is how big a scene Do you usually work in? perhaps mine is lagging because I keep my scenes too big?

Thanks for your response I feel kind of priveleged to be honest. Haha.

was the final line art on this done with the pencil or the brush in flash?

poojipoo In reply to f-squared127 [2015-01-13 17:09:47 +0000 UTC]

I think this was mostly brush tool, or in some cases pencil that was converted to fill to adjust line thickness in places.  We have done line tool clean-up, but we only really like it for very thin line styles, or completely different styles.

the  walkers and the other guys in the back are animated walking forwards, but they remain in one spot. Kinda bugs me.

Good catch! Yeah it bugs me too, but the final render ended up having to go out unexpectedly and some things didn't get fixed I wanted tweaked.
