Been working on this project for a very long time now. I'm very proud of it
It still needs to be tweaked, I think. There are a few things here and there that I'm not 100% satisfied with, but I at least wanted to submit this before I headed off to Chipotle for a massive burrito.
The backstory on this is fairly simple: We see a small planet experiencing what is known as "gravitational collapse", in which some form of black hole has spawned on the surface of the planet (probably due to scientists and the LHC. You know how it is...) and the planet is rapidly contracting into the black hole, getting exponentially hotter as it does so. Google it.
Roughly 15 hours of work on this. Too many layers to count, 2 bags of goldfish, blah blah blah etc. etc.

EDIT 1: Color edits, plus widened the "black hole" on the planet, and added the corona and sun effects. Better, I think

I really like the composition going on here! I love the idea as well, but people won't get it without you telling us. Since the area around a black hole heats up, perhaps you should show that. As matter heats, it turns red; hotter, it turns orange, then yellow, cyan, blue, and lastly, blue-violet.
It would be sick if the mass being sucked was heated and fiery, melting as it gets sucked into the collapse.

I like it
I like the new color scheme, but don't just change colors just cuz you've done it before, color is just as important as detail, shapes, and composition. Color requires mindful purpose too. So on your next space art, always consider, how will color affect my scene? Will it give it a sad mood? an excited mood? an aggressive mood? Will a certain color make some details pop out more? etc
Choosing color is like designing; color determines what is going and how it's happening.

Even though I didn't see that recent Star Trek movie, I know there's something similar in it, and I wondered if that's how it would look 
With such a huge sun there would be likely some bright reflections coming off those lakes of the close planet too, low sun angles over a planet with both water and land gives a perfect opportunity to showcase that cool effect where water actually becomes brighter than the land in the area below the sun, a bit like a more intense version of this [link] where the sun reflects off the sea

Where do you get your inspiration from for space art? As far as I've been able to tell, you've never seen any science fiction

Yeah, I have a strange tendancy to not jump on various sci-fi movies actually, I guess because no-one else I know likes that sort of stuff - and going to the movies alone sucks
I have been drawing space scenery since I was a kid, I simply just generate ideas based on what I know about the subject
