Description An air-to-air nuclear rocket... I'm sure it sounded like a good idea at the time.
Sorry for the wonky angle, I was paying too much attention to the rocket to care about stuff like making the ground level.

"Genie

This air-to-air unguided rocket was designed to carry a nuclear warhead. It was carried by the F-106 and F-101. It was capable of accelerating to a speed of Mach 3 because of its 36,000 pound thrust rocket engine. U.S. Air Force

Length: 9 feet
Diameter: 17 inches
Weight: 800 pounds
Propellant: Solid
Range: 6 miles
First Firing: 1956 "

I went to the missile park at White Sands Missile Range main base, and took a few pictures. The description is from the website and is identical to the signage around the park... but easier to read.

"Davey Crockett" was a recoilless rifle armed with a nuclear warhead. There are a pair of Firebee drones and a anti-submarine drone helicopter in the background.

The only plane to fire this fearsome weapon is the F-89 scorpion.

Well, the only live one ever fired. It was also carried on the F-106 and F-101.

No, it was probably a dummy round, but the real thing wouldn't be dangerously radiated- they keep the nuclear material pretty contained.

Yeah, one of the first unguided, yet stable rockets deployed from a fighter. It used the W54 warhead modified from the "Davey Crockett", another one of those "seemed like a good idea" kind of times weapon. These two weapons were tested or built/deployed actually, and the third strange "Good Idea, Bad planning" weapon was the Nuclear land mine in which the British can call this their own idea that never really seemed good even at the time it was thought up. And everyone thinks that OO7's cast of super villains have crazy ideas.
