Description Playing Pokemon rekindled my interest in working on my own monster-catching game, Miasmon! What a shocking and totally unpredictable and senseless turn of events.

For ages, I've been struggling to actually decide on the STYLE to do the monsters in... but I feel like I've found one that I like, so I wanted to try to redraw some existing designs in it. And here they are!
I came up with these ages ago, but they've been redesigned slightly here, especially Damserulean.

I really *think* about these designs when coming up with them, rather than just drawing something that 'looks cool' but lacks substance...

Carminymph is based on a dragonfly larva, which are called nymphs. It's also Courage type (fire before I started using these 'sentiments'), and as such is meant to look like some kind of armoured warrior. Its evolutionary line would be regal, representing kings, and I tried to get that across through the crown-like mark on Heirubeus's head.

Cyanymph is based on a damselfly nymph! Google can show you what they look like! Damserulean is supposed to look princess-like; its 'figure' is feminine, and it has five long, billowing wings that look like a dress or something (it'd look clearer in 3D, but alas). I noticed in some photos of damselflies, like this one , they had black on top of their eyes, which made me think of makeup'd feminine eyes, so I used that!

I'll probably trace over these in Flash to do the actual game graphics!

Oh, and their types would be as follows:

Carminymph: Courage (sentiment) ~ Insectoid / Warrior (body types) ~ Essent (evolutionary stage)
Heirubeus: Courage ~ Insectoid / Warrior ~ Transient

Cyanymph: Sorrow ~ Insectoid / Piscine ~ Essent
Damserulean: Sorrow ~ Insectoid / Piscine ~ Transient

Ooh, I really like both of these! Dragonflies and Damselflies are some of the few insects that don't give me the heebie-jeebies, and I like how these are designed. In their pre-evolutions, you can tell that they're related, but distinctly different, and not just in color. I also really like the gradient color scheme on Damserulean, it's very pretty.

Β On a side note, Heriubeus' head looks kinda Lingon-ish to me (not a bad thing, I thought Lingons were pretty awesome); was that intended, or did it just happen like that?

I noticed that it was very much like a Lingon too, but it wasn't intentional! I made the connection after I'd finished, and it made me think "ooh, maybe that's some design feature that I just naturally like or something". Its head actually looks most like the earliest lingons I drew when I was like eight!

I love it!
Both looks great, and when I could I will catch Damserukean! Hopefully
What i love so much in this and the rest of Miasmon sprites is their inspiration.
Pokemon designs are mostly based on real life animals and objects.
While it works for the first and second gen, seeing a Pokemon based on a candel(you are still my favorite GHOST-type litwick!) was... you know.
I wish they had taken more inspiration from imagination, mythology, mystical and such
That way, even damselflies can look mystical and unique, at least for me!
Keep up this design direction, I love it
I really hope to play this game one day!
Tally-ho!
