Wow, this is so intense! I can't stop looking at it. I guess I'm not sure what animal it is, but I assumed it was an impala! Anyway, you've really conveyed the concept beautifully. I like how the area of greatest detail is in the lion's face - it really pulls my attention to it.
I realize this is an older piece, but I hope you won't mind me sharing a few composition thoughts? I sort of wonder if an animal in this situation would be showing more of the white of the eye? I don't know if ungulate eyes work like that, but I think it would increase the feeling of fear even more for the viewer. You might also consider blurring the fur around the edges of the image, or at least simplifying the texture - with closeup "photography" like this you probably wouldn't have both the lion and all the facial planes in focus at the same time. That would also create a stronger sense of motion and drama in the image. Finally, I wonder if the scene in the reflection could be made more dramatic - as it is, the grass kind of reads like a green play-field, and the sun kind of competes with the lion for attention. What if the sun were directly behind the lion, or directly in front?
Anyway, I really dig this piece and I'm glad you continued the series with your zebra!

Those are excellent critiques, thank you!!
With this and Fear II, I've been told the animals should be more "walleyed" so yes, I need to show more whites around the eyes and would like to do a third piece 'correctly' showing this. I would also take your other suggestions to heart and use more of the photography tricks I've learned over the years and apply it. I know a big problem with this piece was I was so keen on doing it, that I didn't plan it out enough nor could I find many references to draw from so, a lot of it was sort of made up.
Any suggestions for species competitors for Fear III?

Ah, that whole circle thing sure is scary! You did a very nice job with this and of course the sentiment is an added benefit to the art.

I was captivated when I saw this and clicked full view almost immediately to get a better view. The fur detail is absolutely amazing and the reflection looks so real. I would have guessed a gazelle, and from the looks of it he has no time left to run!
