Description Notes for myself: I need to add roc, huldra, hippogriff maybe, giant and/or ogre.

EDIT: Added several species and edited some of the info in the description as it's outdated...  some of it may still be slightly incorrect. You should check out my species info for more detailed information: puddingvalkyrie.deviantart.com…

Please suggest further species and I'll add them! If it exists in fairy tales or folklore, it exists in Miss Prince/Vampires Don't Belong in Fairytales. There are also things from modern fiction that exist there, such as modern vampires and elves.

Normal humans: I'm pretty sure you know what a normal human is. Although 'normal' in this case means they possess very little to no magic. They have a low magic tolerance.

Magic users: Mage, sorceress, wizard, witch, enchanter, magician... the only difference between normal humans and magic users is their ability to use magic and their tolerance to it. Anyone may learn to use magic, but as Rosie says 'That doesn't mean anyone should'.

Elves: The modern type of elf. This elf is Sara's mother, Khalira =3 There are lots of types of elves - Sara and her mother are Sand elves, but there are forest elves and mountain elves etc etc etc. There are of course many types of the traditional elves, but they actually fall under the category of 'fairy'.
These elves are merely pointy eared humans, living slightly longer than humans do and they're generally more physically and mentally adept. They also have a higher magical tolerance.

Fairy: There are many types of fairies. They can only live in a very high magic area, so they're usually only found in Fairyland and a few other high magic places, such as the blue forest. They do like to travel though - but it is only travel.
Fairies have incredibly high magical tolerance and ability.
This particular fairy is Marlina, Will's host mother.

Selkies and other changelings: A selkie is a fairy with a sealskin. There are many other such fairies. The usual story is that a man comes across a group of them bathing, and he spies a tree on which they have left their robes. He steals one and the fairy left behind is forced to be his wife. For some reason.

Djinni: A traditionally nomadic race, very similar to fairies. They have strict rules on magic use.

Succubi: A sub type of djinni. They have a reputation for seducing humans.

Dwarves: This dwarf is Lady Jane(do you notice anything?). Dwarves like this are rare. Born from human parents, they have a quasi-magical nature and often have special abilities.

The race of dwarves (not shown, as they don't look different) live underground and are nocturnal.

True vampires: True vampires may not only be human, but my also be elves, fairies... a whole range of things. True vampires were always something else before they turned, and are incredibly rare.
They require blood on almost a daily basis or they crumble into dust. Otherwise their bodies function as they always did, despite becoming ageless.

Regular vampires: This particular vampire is Count Lamprey. Ranging from the sort that skulks in castles ambushing nightdress wearing women on balconies to the sort that go to highschool and have girlfriends, regular vampires are the descendants of true vampires. They need less blood than true vampires to stay stable. The further away from the true vampire they are, the more stable they become - though their base race is also a factor.
They have a very high magical tolerance and abilities.
Vampires' abilities come from their magic which they are taught when they are small. They have no inherent abilities, such as super strength or mind-control, but nor do they have any silly weaknesses such as garlic or running water.

There are many other kinds of vampires, but they are classed as monsters. (I need to add those)

Pixie: Small magical creatures with wings and tails. They have their own kingdom, much like fairies.

Merrow: An unusual kind of merfolk. They are green all over, and have both legs and a tail. They have red cloaks that allow them to breathe underwater. They're good at weather magic.

Undine: An underwater fairy, essentially. Their green hair suggests merrow ancestry.

Demi-fairies: Generally anything that's half-beast.

Mermaids: I'm pretty sure you know that these are. They're adept particularly at water magic.
There are many sub-types of mermaids.

Nixie: Generally more malevolent than mermaids, but not always the case. Nixie (also known as sirens) have the innate ability to control with their singing, unlike regular mermaids.

Centaur: Generally better with weapons than magic.

Lamia: Half-serpents, usually malevolent. They prey on children and unwary men. Created magically for some ancient war.

Harpies: Half-bird, half women demi-fairies. May also be sirens. They will eat whatever they can catch, but are not necessarily malevolent.

Sphinx: Some have wings, some don't. Adept at magic, and very tricky. They are quite rare, and normally found living in desert-type areas.

Yokai: This loosely translates as 'demon'. I would like you to note that some things classified as 'yokai' here are not true yokai as they are classified in Japanese folklore.

Yuki onna: 'Snow woman'. They live on snowy mountains and glaciers. Their skin is so pale, it is almost white. Their hair is black and their lips are red - these are the only things that stand out in the snow, as they are usually naked or wearing a white yukata/kimono.
This yuki onna is one of Freya's cousins.

Animal yokai: This yokai is a fox, but there are many kinds of animal yokai, such as cats and tanuki. Aurelia is a cat yokai. These yokai get along well with fairies, as they too are pranksters by nature. They have both an animal and human form, and are adept at magic with a high magical tolerance.

Kelpie: Classified as a horse yokai. Appearing usually as a beautiful horse, their fur becomes incredibly sticky when dry. They act docile to lure unwary victims to them, to touch them or ride them. But touch them and you'll stick fast, at which point they drag you into the water. There is always sand in their mane (or hair). They have a human form, which they use to seduce humans. Some have pointed ears, this points to fairy ancestry.

Garwulf: Classified as a wolf yokai. A wolf that may disguise itself as a human.

Beasts: There are many kinds of magical beasts. Some of them talk, some do not. Some are animals, some are people. Although in magical realms, there are normal talking animals too. If you know what I mean. Like talking cats.

Unicorns: Unicorns can talk and they are very wise. They are also fairly rare - they may only live where there is a magical spring underground.

Dragons: They like shiny things. I'm pretty sure you know what dragons are.

Griffins: Fairies use them as steeds, because frankly, they're way cooler than horses. Unicorns are far too digified and using kelpies would be really, really dumb.

Phoenix - a predatory bird that has learned to use fire magic. Worshipped in Sheva. The bright orange plumage here is breeding plumage. Outside the breeding season, they are dull brown.

Serpent - they're freaking huge. They're pretty much a whale only they're a water dragon and magical.

Pegasus - it's a horse with wings, yo. That's literally it.

Spirits: There are many kinds of spirits.

Elementals: There are many kinds of elementals. This one is an air elemental. They're very rare and little is known about them. Though they appear to be male or female, they don't appear to breed.

Ghosts: I shouldn't have to explain ghosts...

Keplie's aren't really yokai though are they? I'm like 99% sure they come from Celtic mythology.

Although who knows, Japan might have something really similar, their monsters are all over the place.

In folklore no, they're not classified as yokai. I wrote that in the description.
There are several kinds of murder pony and most of them come from either Celtic, Scandinavian or Germanic folklore. There's a specific kind of Manx Kelpie as well, that has pointy ears like a horse when human.
There are LOTS of folklore creatures all over the world that have a human disguise and yokai is a convenient classification to put them under.
There's were-jaguars in Latin America, hyena men in Africa, kelpies in Europe...

I can't take credit for 'murder pony', it's a Ducktales quote.

Based on actual Scots mythology; change it or not as suits Plot better.

"Selkies and other changelings: A selkie is a fairy with a sealskin. There are many other such fairies. The usual story is that a man comes across a group of them bathing, and he spies a tree on which they have left their robes. He steals one and the fairy left behind is forced to" stay with him until he returns her robe and she can transform back into her seal form.

When I wrote this, now many years ago, I didn't realise that the fairy was forced to do whatever the person who stole her cloak said. It does need updating on here, but I am now aware of the reason.
