That's pretty creepy! I thought for sure that is some sort of manipulation, but I guess not! I've never seen anything like that before.. great job!

Thanks! The only manipulation here was done by the nature itself!

Great pose! How many mantis breeders do you have in Poland?
I wish we can have these here. I'm 'breeding' the local False Garden mantis I found outside. The eggs are waiting to hatch now.

pulsarr In reply to biawak [2007-04-13 07:42:14 +0000 UTC]

We have a few experienced breeders, and some of them have their accounts here (like blepharopsis). In Poland we have only one mantis species and it'very rare, so You in Australia have much more! I buy mantids (or used to buy) from other breeders (not only in Poland) via internet, so You can do that too.
I hope Your mantis eggs will hatch soon.

Thank You, I'm also glad how this photo came out. Maybe a little too bright (I don't have good flash) but still I consider it one of my best mantis shots. Thanks for faving it.

the upperbody (thorax) of this species seems bizarrely short and makes it look even weirdier.
great pose and stunning shot! definitely a fav! ^_^

Machinegun-Willy [2006-09-22 22:19:16 +0000 UTC]

That is awesome. I wish we had those things where I live. I've only seen a mantis in my area once. I've seen a stickbug too, but that was back when I was 6 or 7. Haven't seen any around since (and I'm 24).

What did you photograph it against, and what settings did you use to get that absolute black background?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pulsarr In reply to Machinegun-Willy [2006-09-25 19:15:00 +0000 UTC]

I wish we had such mantids too - this one comes from my private breed, it normally lives in more exotic places than I live. I live in Poland, where there is one mantis species (never seen one yet) and no stick insects, so You're in a better place

As far as I remember the photo was taken on my chair, I put the stick and the mantis on it, annoyed her a little and on the background I guess I put a black shirt or maybe even there was no background, only my room space, but the camera flash made it darker, as usual flashes do.
I don't have any special equipment, such as macro lenses or flashes, I just use Canon G5 in macro mode.
All of the details of the camera settings You can see on the right in Picture menu below Thumb.
Regards
