Not really? The Characters are not opposites per se, they're just "meaner" forms of their originals. They can still be spared and Frisk can still be friends with them (it just takes a lot more effort).
From what I remember, Chara was still murderous, but only so because they didn't believe the monsters had good sides to them. Basically, it was all for Frisk's well being, so they wouldn't get hurt and could escape the underground faster.

Chara is murderous but with good intentions. They're still an ally of Frisk's, but wants all the monsters in the underground to die so that they don't hurt our lovable protagonist =w=

Underfell would be super cool as an actual game! But I tend to think of it as just the hard mode in Undertale, but with a few character changes o0o
