Eric Melenbacher watched in awe as the massive airship Aria descended slowly onto the tarmac from the thick fog above. Immense floodlights flicked on, illuminating the intercontinental ship's tan hull. Wind from the Aria's propellers whipped around Eric and Shea. Jacket and sandy hair flapping in the wind, Eric tugged the resisting wyvern towards the airship's open bay doors, trying at the same time to quell his own terror of the skies. He would not, he insisted to himself, suffer the same fate as his brother. No, he would overcome his dread and try to enjoy his long voyage across the desert sky. The Atmospheric Barrier would not have him. Shea snarled and flapped her wings as they approached the airship's gaping maw.
No turning back.

Anywho, I will try to answer questions before they are asked a bazillion times.

Q: What's the "Atmospheric Barrier"?
A: It's a separation of atmospheric layers on the planet where the story takes place. The Barrier marks the divide between a breathable, Earth-like air and a super-dense, toxic layer dense enough to float a small ship on. This makes lighter-than-air travel far more desirable than boat travel, as a boat makes you much, much closer to the dense layer. Humans have to live on tall mesas above the Barrier. These mesas cover approximately 40% of the planet.

Q: Eric has a wyvern, why can't he just fly away?
A: Wyverns on this planet are far too small to carry a human, especially an adult like Eric, for any extended period of time. She might be able to pick him up briefly, but not fly with him. She's used as a fighting companion and messenger.

Q: Why are they standing on a catwalk?
A: Becaue I'm too lazy to draw horizons.

Q: Where are they going?
A: No idea, make something up.

I need a name for my planet!!!
