The Bystanders are one half of a bio-engineered race. Their ultimate purpose in their (very short) lifespan is to observe and study other lifeforms.

Because they have no mouths, they eat by other methods: through their hands and feet. Substance is absorbed through a soft, spongy pad on either appendage. It may also be apparent that they have no ears or nose- the deeper pockets of flesh (shown above) are sensory organs capable of picking up a wide variety of information from their surroundings.

Communication is a non-evasive sort of thought-sharing. They access the language center of one's brain, sending a direct channeling to it from their own mind. The Bystander will then attempt to communicate with you through your own thoughts, using the vocabulary that you so far understand. Their words are never exact, and vary mind by mind this way- the use of synonyms is a good way to write them from character to character. Similarly in this fashion, Bystanders cannot lie, and you will always be able to know what they're feeling.

Unfortunately, their personality, though they are quite intelligent (not super-intelligent) and seemingly gifted with amazing learning capabilities, is childish and often 'bratty'. Being that their lifespan almost never exceeds ten years, they never really 'mature'. While they won't go on about cooties, or get into pointless fights (in fact, they're very weak- they wouldn't last in a fight at all), they definitely won't react the same to some things as an adult human would. For instance, if they're reprimanded, Bystanders may throw a fit and complain, throwing their channeled link into everyone mind within fifty feet, broadcasting their tantrum.

They are not usually brats, however- most of them seem, at least, like well-behaved children. Somewhat unsettling, even, in the fact that they study and stare at most everything, from watching someone breathe, eat or sleep, to concentrating on how one might move their fingers when grasping a cup or tugging on a rope. It's damned creepy, sometimes.

There are eight Bystanders in all- 'Crest' (or any synonym therefore of) being the chosen leader, who bears the burden of the spirit of Rot, is shown above in the pink carapace. The other seven are similarly dark-skinned, but their carapace colors differ, in shades that might remind one of ice cream flavors. The others are named Axis, Under, Twist, Furrow, Hum, Drive, and Sever, or synonyms thereof.

Their ship, 'Observer Beta', and the 'armor' (carapace) upon their bodies, before they flew over Zevir, harbored a pulse shield that filtered out bacteria that would be bad for their system. When the energy was cut, so did their protection from the bacteria that could harm them.

They were miserable at first, unknowing how to fit into a makeshift colony of survivors, but soon enough, with their flesh rotting away from the terrible reaction to Zevir's bacteria, they learned to cooperate. And this is how the spirit of Rot became akin to them, and how Crest came to bear it.

It is Crest's duty, with the spirit of Rot, is to be sure that the food doesn't spoil. It can reverse any process of biological or organic ruin or decay, meaning anything from food, to flesh, to wood, can be reversed from rot at his call.

The spirit of Rot, when it appears from the small gem on Crest's cloth (no other Bystander has such a stone), is no bigger than a very lumpy potato (as shown). It seethes a dark substance downward, and a misty substance upward, both of which disappear before they trail more than three inches away from its being. It behaves in a sleepy manner, and doesn't speak in but mumbles and sighs.

The Bystanders have no building skill and are really rather quite weak, so they rely greatly upon the UAD to assist them. The UAD helped build their dirigible, which in motion will stick closely to the UAD's massive ship- in case of a storm or trouble, they will land upon the ship to prevent damage.

The spirit is quite cute. In a fetal-pig-in-a-jar kind of way. Which... fits.
But yeah, these guys are awesome in all respects. You crafted a really cool race and group of characters.
