It was a walk through habitat so they're used to people. Technology helps too, the lens can zoom larger than life and the resolution you shoot in can increase the apparent size/closeness even more.

This was a Nikon D80 with a 70-300mm lens a few months later I upgraded to a Nikon D5200 using the same lens.
