Description Secretary Bird (Sagittarius serpentarius) prancing for his lunch at the National Birds of Prey Center, nr Newent. This bird was so funny and pranced about the arena; all that was missing was a handbag lol. Such an awesome bird... a one of a kind unlike any other raptor, it will basically stamp on its prey until its quite quite dead with its very long legs. Prey is usually snakes, and a rubber snake was used as a demo.

What I noticed with this male bird was that, if running into wind towards a choice tidbit of food, he would extend his wings and spring across the ground with presumably less weight than he'd have otherwise or occasionally jump a bit higher and glide for a bit. Such an agile bird with lots of character.

Thanks for looking.

Absolutely... I think this is Madeline, an inappropriate name for a male bird!
Anyway... yes awesome bird.

Thanks for the comment!

Isn't he something! I bet he put on quite a strut for ya'll. Did you happen to catch any shots of him from the ground up? Next to something for perspective would have been very cool. Their legs are so freakin' long; they're definitely one of a kind. How the hell did an African bird of prey wind up in the U.K.?

He did indeed! This is the shot with the most of the bird, and stood next to the keeper... but not all the legs in it and the head is blurred so I wasn't going to put it up. Here it is... [link] .

This is the second centre I know with a secretary bird, and I know a couple of zoo's too at least... they're popular it would seem so they find their way over.

Thanks for the extra smile, Graeme; I find it impossible not to smile, and I imagine you were doing a lot of that as well. The handbag comment, especially after this photo, is just so spot on! He reminds me of older ladies out shopping in Florida for some weird ass reason. Or one of those over done caricature-type, Bronx women with curlers in the hair, legging, a short skirt and high heels, you see in some movies!

Thanks Erica! Perhaps those quills on the head are reminding you of knitting needles...

Knitting needles are good for poking people with

I just took another look at him and he looks so serious and as if he's standing at attention in full dress uniform.

hahaha... I've put the pc out of coffee strike range; all that would get hit is the monitor/keyboard most likely. Laptop's don't like coffee much.
