A long time ago in a galaxy far far away.....Jedi Master Luke Skywalker wasn't so happy how his character was written in the latest Star Wars film. So he decided to go to a cantina to meet and talk to an old friend named Lucas.
Yeah...
After watching TLJ twice, I have to say I still like most of it. Except for several stuff:
Wasted Characters, Uselss characters, Silly scenes.
-Rose
-Carrie Poppins (I love Carrie Fisher tho)
-How Luke Skywalker ended
-Boba Fett all over again (Phasma)
-Porgs (utterly useless, storywise)

At least the porgs have a fairly reasonable excuse... where they were filming is a bird sanctuary. and these damn puffins kept getting everywhere. The porgs were invented at late date so they could CGI over the puffins...and they kinda just became an in joke...

To be fair, the only reason Luke was that way was because he had depression (and a pretty severe case at that). It's not like he could get any help either, poor guy. That still doesn't excuse the fact he nearly killed his nephew in his sleep though. At least the porgs were cute. Rose was okay, I'm hoping we get more character development in the new movie.

The resemblance between Luke and Lucas...you can definitely see the fact that Luke was, in a way, a self-insert by Lucas.Β That's not a criticism of the art; it was a smart move IMO to draw that out.
Oh my God, poor porgs, being tortured, though--that breaks my heart, animal lover that I am!
Oddly enough, I actually suspect that offscreen, the porgs may have kept Luke from offing himself during his years of depression on Ahch-to.Β Animals are good for the soul that way--they don't judge, they don't care what you've done, only how you treat them in the moment.Β Personally, I know my cats helped me get through some really rough times with depression and anxiety.Β (Which is among the reasons I didn't react badly to the way Luke was portrayed: Mark Hamill's mannerisms honestly shocked me with how WELL they captured a person suffering severe clinical depression...I could relate!)Β For similar reasons, when I think about the shit the Resistance survivors have gone through...well, the realistic part of me that knows how much PTSD is likely running around there, is actually glad there are going to be a few semi-domesticated animals on board the Falcon.Β Taking care of a creature's day-to-day needs can keep you grounded in the parts of reality that don't suck.
(I wish the CGI on the porgs had been better though: my cats and I have watched enough of Planet Earth to know their feathers should be dirtier, more ruffled, not pristine like they've been through the laundry.)
There were other scenes I didn't like...the sea cow thing, the Carrie Poppins bit (shit CGI, plus Leia had no training), lack of info provided on Snoke, and some other stuff that rankled.Β Overall, I came away with a middling but ultimately OK opinion of TLJ.Β I can see its problems but still enjoyed it overall.

Holy, epically wondrous! The Phenomenal Luke Skywalker and George Lucas are stunning and The Cantina Scenery looks incredible. The designs, Phasma, Boba Fett, Porg, JediΒ characters, bartender, aliens, expressions, poses, interactions, dart game, board, bar, death sticks, robes, suit, armor, eyes, jacket, glasses, hair, helmet, hallway, ceiling, wings, tentacles, humor, milk, wings, clothing, action, gleam, glow, shadows, movement, flow, effects, realisticness, perspective, atmosphere, hues, textures, concept, composition, uniqueness, lighting, colors, style, and other details are also sensational. Amazingly Radical work!
