I recall Tyrion saying that people did suspect that dragons are at least as intelligent as humans. There were very few scenes where that showed through. This being one of them the best examples. Which called into question a few things.
1. Why don't the dragons rule the world?
2. Why were the dragons subservient to humans even when said humans were treating them like pets and leading them to extinction?
I love dragons but if you can't write them in a way that makes sense, then why add them to the show? I think the show would have flowed a lot better and logically if they weren't in at all. Removes at least half the plot holes.

I know. Inconsistency and rushing were the stars of the show, we would have been more than happy to wait some more for a better unraveling!

I think they were always pretty intelligent. Plus the more they grow, the more mature they get. As for the rest I don't know.
By the way, you chose a great moment and captured it pretty well! Thank you for sharing!

Someone else came up with this; He's either the smartest dragon, or the dumbest. The smartest for reasons you mentioned. The dumbest because he saw the knife do it --> there is a big chair of knives that must be the culprit.

Good job. Alas, I've never been interested in that series, either show or book. I prefer my fantasy to be more of a inspirational ending, and not "well, medicine wasn't all that advanced then..." attitude.

Regarding the last part, dragons, despite being guided by their instincts like any other animals, are supossed to be inteligent too. They can understand Daenerys words and commnads, and they are even able of knowing who are actually friends or who are not, even though they never saw them before.
And of course they are capable of feeling emotions! They mourned the death of their brother Viseiron. Even Rhaegal tried to catch him when he was falling down.

That is right, yes, but... But real life animals have emotions and, for example, elephants are known for mourning their dead. But they are not making complex logical decisions like Drogon did in this scene! Somehow, he understood that Jon Snow had to kill Dany and that the real cause of her death, what led her to this point, was the throne. If an animal would see their master killed it won't give a second thought about attacking the killer. Animals don't understand deep motivations. But before that, dragons acted exactly like dumb dogs.

Reminds me of something that was said in the second Narnia movie. If you're treated like a dumb animal, over time, you will become one. That was what Dany was doing all the way until Astapor. Treating her dragons like pets more than actual sons, and they responded with being little monsters. In westeros however she treated them more like thinking individuals, so maybe they finally started to act that way as well. As wise and powerful beings capable of thought (like why did Drogons brothers not incinerate Tyrion unless they actually felt threatened by him? Any wild beast would have taken him down the moment he was within striking distance).
I'm not saying that dragons are super smart, but they have been described as being intelligent, even more than most people. So the fact that Drogon managed to put the pieces together this way did not suprise me, rather it makes me appreciate him as a character a lot more. In the end, it was Drogon who shattered the wheel, finishing what his mother started before the power of the iron throne (and the events that had transpired) corrupted her mind (Should add some Targaryen inbreeding madness as well here). I feel that it's really poetic as well, a dragon forged the iron throne and thus the chains that bound the men of Westeros to this cycle, and a dragon set them free by destroying it.
Also one needs to take into consideration that not a whole lot is known about dragons in westeros (how they behave, how smart they are etc.). A lot of that knowledge likely perished with the destruction of Valyria. Also dragons are magical beings, despite them fitting the "beast" archetype, so to make assumptions about them in the same way one would with "natural" beings is a bit far fetched. It's the same as trying to fit magic into say real life physics. There's a high chance you're just making a fool out of yourself. But that's humans for ya, what you don't understand, you try to either fit or force into some known format to make it more understandable. And if it doesn't fit, we either discard them as lies or treat it with fear and unease (or curiosity for that matter).

Sure, you are correct that fantasy creatures can be hardly compared with real-life animals, but it is simply the issue of writing. There were no signs that those dragons, who had intelligence a bit above animals, are capable of coming to a logical conclusion. Like, that the throne is the root of all evil. Before this moment, they have been acting like a flock of sheep. In short, the writers suck.

Well, the writing has progressively become worse and worse the further D&D get from the books (their manuscript essentially), so I have just resorted myself to fill in some of the holes here and there with theories online and my own impressions. Like Danys madness for some reason worked like a switch (even though most people says it was "foreshadowed" -_-. Again, FORESHADOWING IS NOT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!!), and she appearently "forgot" that the Ironborne fleet existed? Sure, let's let one of the main characters out of the blue have a personality change, and FORGET ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MILITARY ASSETS THE ENEMY HAS!! Also how did she not see them? Plot. Just bad plot from Dim & Dum. Anyone that still defende these nobs are bound to be just casuals, whose only interaction with the show is from episode to episode. Like hell, if even the main actors cannot say, with any entusiasm, that the show ended on a good note? Sheesh..... now that's foreshadowing.
I will still stay by my impressions of the scene however, horrible writing (which I agree it is) or not. Like if Drogon wanted to kill Jon, there was no one there that would have told him not to. I would've guessed that any no-hurt Targaryen thoughts in his mind would have shut down when he put together the pieces. Like yes, he was angry and probably cursed at Jon in his own way, but deducted that the throne was the main issue here. But again, I will not defend the writing of this season at all, it's just so bad.
