The story of how Sariatu and Hanzo met, delivered close to the climax rather than as context for the prologue, was my favorite of the meta-fiction stories within the larger narrative. And when Little Kubo floated into their arms, I almost cried because I knew what came next was so terrible for both mother and son.

It's too tragic what happened to them: that night, they lost a loving husband and a good father
