Are the old Godzilla movies worth checking out? I was never too into the franchise, but I loved the recent Godzilla movie! Of course, the special effects aren't going to be as good...

Like your piece, really ironic towards the issue.
Well it depends, if your not put off by the effects of the old Godzilla films than you'll find some are pretty good.
The first one '54 deals with the social issue of nuclear weapons and the dangerous effects of them.
60s-70s movies have a serious side to them but towards the latter years they become goofy and aimed more towards kids.
'84 is pretty fucking good and it deals with the cold war issues of the time. From there it's usually Godzilla fighting another monster but it was worth the watch for me.
Sure you won't get a CGI Godzilla that looks really there. However, the details the suits have are so lifelike and so amazing that you probably won't care if it is a suit. Nevertheless, it depends on your take on effects in movies.
