Description The Fall

______________________________________________

Thanatos was intelligent, perceptive, astute and decisive. And yet, he found himself taking pause, trying to process what had happened and how he had come to this unfamiliar place. He had just been in the heavenly stables, resting comfortably after completing another important mission for the gods of Olympus. Suddenly, without warning he was torn from his home, plummeting from the heavens to… well, wherever this was.

What in Zeus's name is going on? he thought to himself. Although he did not understand what had happened, or why he was no longer on Olympus, he immediately began to assess his surroundings. His instincts told him to identify a source of food and water, and be aware of any dangerous situation that may arise.

He glance all around, and discovered he was in a cave, with passages carved deep within the rock. Beautiful stalactites and stalagmites sparked and gleamed in the rays of light entering the cavern opening. It was warm and dry, and looked rather uninhabited. It seemed familiar somehow, as if the memory of this place was buried within the recesses of his mind. He felt strange, a peaceful calm, noting a vague familiarity in the air. And then he realized, there was a hint of magic here… weak and barely perceptible, but it was present. He felt the connection to the gods, remembered their stories and history, and suddenly realized where he was.

He had fallen to Earth. To be specific, he had fallen to Mount Ida, on the island of Crete, Greece. Thanatos was in the caves of Zeus, where the ruler of the Heavens had been hidden as an infant from Cronus, until such a time as he could free his siblings and defeat the Titans. It was here in this very cave, where Zeus had learned to master his powers and develop his abilities, that Thanatos would also begin his journey upon the Earth. He felt comforted, reassuring himself that if the god of the Heavens could survive life on this mortal Earth, strengthening his supremacy and ascend to take his rightful place upon the throne from this very same starting spot, then surely Thanatos would be able to draw strength from these ancient passages to embark upon his own journey to return to Olympus.

Well, I got overwhelmed trying to weed through the last few days worth of messages here (which I will still keep checking until the inbox says "zero"), so I decided to quit for a while and put the finishing touches on this piece instead tonight. It's been sitting here waiting for me to finish it for weeks (started it before I wasn't feeling so well). So here you have my Cavitto stallion's offical arrival on Earth.

Gorgeous!
I love that majestic rearing pose and Thanatos himself looks handsome as always.
Background looks also great; really nice job with cave's stone walls and sand on the ground.
That magical swirl around him is an icing on the cake!
It is also nice to learn what happened when he fell from the Olympus and where did he landed.

Thank you... and thanks for the too, hun.

I knew what I wanted to do with his "Fall" story, and figured that it was time for me to finally go ahead and get it posted. Oh, if only I had time to practice drawing Thanatos 24-7.

Funny thing is, I think the background took me just as long to paint as the horse did (longer really), LOL. Still need practice with those. But I found a great PS watercolor brush that helped me get a more "textured" feeling on the cave walls and ground, and then just kept going over and over until I had the right colors/shading.

You're very welcome!

Same here, I wish there was more time for my Thyella and her story... but maybe stories and pictures will be better seasoned when we have let them sit instead of writing/drawing the ideas as soon as they pop up our heads.

Oh and tell me about the landscapes - it is amazing how much longer it can take to draw a tree/mountain/any background object compared to for example a horse or dragon.

I like this! Love the pose (heavies look really majestic when they rear, with all their feathers ) and the cave rock looks great with all that texture. The starry swirl is a nice touch, too

And now I'll stop, since you're still trying to empty your inbox, not fill it up

Thank you.

And BTW, I never tire of reading your messages! NEVER. (The ones I'm trying to clear out are the 200 deviations of amazing artists I watch, that I want to take the time to go through and leave comments/fav, but just had to take a break for a wee bit... nothing like a long day of work though to inspire one back into the world of art, again ).

You're welcome ^^

And that's good to know, considering I can go on XD. But 200 deviations does sound like a lot, which is why I don't have the time at the minute to watch people and I just drop by their pages regularly Good luck with the rest!

LOL, I caved. I just finally started to delete some of the stacks... feel bad, but I wanted a clear inbox. Now I can start all over and enjoy all the beautiful things people post, from here on out.

Haha - well at least you gave it a good attempt

And you can always da search 'fawnling' or something like that and then use the filters on the left to arrange them newest first - you can just skim through the pages for anything recent that looks good ^^
