“i was praying for you.”

The beads almost looked as if they were hanging in the air, his body so dark against the backdrop of evening. He rolled a bead between his fingers before huffing and ignoring it. He didn’t get it but he tried to look…appreciative? Understanding? He didn’t dwell on it but he let the beads click against the metallic scales of his body.

“Praying for me? What for?”

“doesn’t matter,” jhator replied. “i just was.”

jhator dumped his ass in the dirt, hands to his head. what the fuck was wrong with him? what was he doing? this wasn’t right, this wasn’t him, and he did not want this.

he took a deep breath and he held it— like he wasn’t going to get another one.

“You’re acting really weird. Are you okay? Maybe you hit your head too hard on the wall…” He reached his hand out to touch the man’s head, mouth pursed uncertainly as he tried to assess the problem. Was he having a breakdown or something? He hadn’t had a breakdown since he was eleven and he was forced to kill a couple of baby animals. He tried to dredge up something that’d helped him through it. “Look, just take a deep breath okay?”

it was a matter of pride, of stress, of leadership. of fear, of anger, of rage and denial— of pain. of claim of body, of claim of mind,

and that handprint burned past his skin and into his chest.

“i don’t know what’s up, man. i’m sorry.”

“maybe we owe each other a great many things.” he fell silent a moment, eyes trailing the path. “i’m glad i didn’t kill you.”

“Yea. Me too.” Voice grating as a rockfall. He walked with hard footfalls, crunching logs as he dragged the carcass over it. The sky was lightening slowly, becoming a stolid gray.

Sargon felt a vehement need to mention he didn’t owe anyone jack out of pure reflex but he pressed his mouth shut. Terms like that had gotten him into too many problematic situations. He didn’t take things that he needed to pay for and he didn’t get compensated for things he’d given. “Don’t worry about it though. I’m not really keeping track.” I’m not thinking about you, he thought. I won’t.

i will not think of you, jhator thought in time with the rhythm of their footsteps. i can’t.

“yeah. neither am i.”

he was a liar and he just couldn’t stop.
