Description ...after a photo by 19th century English photographer Francis Frith. My late English friend, Denny Hunter used to bring me
photos books from old English photographers.
This one translated ratherwell from B/W to imagined watercolor. They're not new paintings, but they serve as a great
remembrance of my Yorkshire friend.

I am admittedly not a big fan of effects, but here they work very well indeed. Plus I very much like the composition and the colour work, that is to say, the composition is what drew me in initially and what will make me come back to this picture again.

If you happened to read my notes, the composition was done for me, by an 19th century British photographer named Francis Frith....I just added color in my own style. I no longer do this sort of thing...but THANKS.

Oh yes, I had read your comment below the picture. But it was still you who chose the photograph with this exact composition and I assume you also adjusted it slightly (which is what I do, when I draw from a photo), so don't belittle your part in making the picture what it is .

No, I was never feeling the slightest guilt. Probably, it should be an honor for the photographer, to be "explored" in a new medium. I eventually concluded that:....'hey, this ISN'T ME." And I began to paint from my own heart, and point of view. I appreciate your comments!

To have a meaning behind the painting is what I look for. Certainly caught my attention and you did an excellent job. Keep up the great work

Just curious to know what meaning Robin Hood's
Bay has for you?

No problem!Β

In the promotional business for 6 years now and looking to change positions.

Hopefully moving towards Film Production.

This piece just reminded me of trips I took to Europe near the Black Sea. Β Haven't gone back in a couple of years and looking to bring some pleasant memories back.

I had lunch every week with a Brit from Yorkshire,
and he would bring me a lot of B/W photos from very
old turn-of-the-century books, postcards etc etc of
English Villages.Β
Β Β Β Β Β  I would copy
these scenes sometimes ~ adding whatever color I
could imagine. I don't do this anymore. Even copying
my own photos is rare. Google (IMAGES)="Photographer Frith,
Whitby England, Robin Hoods Bay" and this scene should
be there in B/W. Bring back some great photos too, OK?

That is very interesting. I also grab postcards from my travels and do my paintings based on photos I have taken.Β

Looking forward to seeing more work!

These are scenes taken (drawn) from postcards,
Old English Postcards. They sold well in galleries
back in the 1990s. This was one of my favorites, and
I'm not sure it's in my possession any longer.

Believe me, I know how hard it is to miss something on this
site. I belong to so many GROUPS, I have to discard deviations
by the pound...w/o paying much attention, one way or another.
When I find something I like - a LOT - I oftentimes consider it
a small miracle to have found it!!!! THANKS!!! Alan...

One of my favourite places....Gosh ...You have really captured the beauty, the quaintness.........and the steepness of the road!!!....It's not the easiest of places to get down too!!......no cars allowed...unless authourised!!!!....They do need the beer being delivered to the pub!!!..............Steeper than Where Doc .Martin lives!

richardcgreen In reply to TriciaS [2012-03-03 23:03:03 +0000 UTC]

It's fairly old, doubt if I ever entered it in any competition
as it's quite conservative. It's just a memory of Denny. He was
born in Barnsley (sp?) YORKSHIRE, joined the RAF in 1939, as an
(illegal) under-age recruit, and flew in larger airplanes...
generally down to Gibraltar. He was quite a character and a
large part of my life. He also brought me a book on the seaport
of Whitby, photos by Frith. Think I did one, and I hope I
photographed it, as it was burned - destroyed in a home fire
of the couple and their 5 children, who bought it...I'm ramblin'
again...hugs : Dick G
