Description ...and so begins my adventures as a published newspaper cartoonist; a family friendly, gag-oriented bit of whimsy, and a pretty darn good first effort, I think. I'm very jazzed about a future of writing and drawing these characters, and I'm unbelievably blessed to have a partner whose eye for color simply brings my efforts to life. The editor of the paper is knocked out and we look forward to a long-term business relationship and friendship.
I can only hope it meets the approval of my friends and watchers....

...that is exactly my intent here; to do a family friendly whimsical cartoon strip that is a refreshing change from the profanity-laden, offensive, poorly drawn unfunny cartoon strips that permeate the web. Sometimes it's nice to just smile at a bit of slapstick humor, I think. I am putting every effort into making my bears a lighthearted G-Rated escape from the typical internet comic strips.....
...I thank you endlessly for noticing that, and for your kind compliment. ---Ric C.

HEY THERE!!! GREETINGS FROM ALASKA!!!
I'm very sorry I have taken so long to respond to your very kind note to me; my life has been unbelievably busy lately. I did not delete your comment because I wanted to eventually reply and THANK YOU ENDLESSLY for your positive words regarding my strip BEARY TAILS.
I think it's awesome that you do comics and drawings for your school paper---it lets your friends and peers know that you are a creative artist with something to offer. When I was in school I was the guy who drew the big banners about our football team winning the upcoming game against a rival school. The banners would be hung overhead across the corridors and hallways of school, and everybody came to know me for the kid who drew those cartoon banners. It was great!!!
I really like your dragons; they have a unique style and that is what it really is all about---find your own personal "voice" in your drawings. I think a strip about the adventures of a dragon character would be fantastic---I can't recall a dragon being the main character of a cartoon or a comic strip. It could even be a single panel gag. Perhaps you could think about it and draw up a cartoon and submit it to be published in the school paper (..if you haven't done so already...). The worst they can do is say "No"...
I wish you unending luck in your endeavors to be a published cartoonist. I will be watching your page. Never give up!!! ---Ric C.

wow thanks, that gave me such hope, thank you, I wont give up. I am making a comic called lime and lemons they have a sort of "gig" to it. And I haven't heard of any existing cartoon like it, I will continue building their story, thanks so much for responding, your are a mentor for me, and Ill be watching your extraordinary page aswell, how long did it take you to finally have your comic planned and published?

i'm so pleased for you Rik such a great opportunity to showcase your incredible talents -

something very special about Dad teaching his sons how to accomplish the important things in life

i'm surprised there's not a girl cub especially since you have such a good relationship with your own daughter

and i don't see Mom in your first two creations i assume she'll be equally creative in bringing up the boys?

Ricky-Roo302 In reply to Cmac13 [2010-12-04 09:21:20 +0000 UTC]

....yes, it IS interesting that I gave my bear couple two BOYS and no daughter; I think I just feel that it is easier to write about a pair of rambunctious boys getting into mischief than a girl. Besides, my daughter is a little angel---she NEVER gets into trouble

...and regarding Momma Bear, she will show up for the Christmas strip and many times after that. She is the stable one of the family; she is level headed and intelligent, speaking with proper diction, the "rock" of the family. Her character will develop as time goes on.

...why, Linda Wilder! I believe this is the first time I have received a comment from you. I am a HUGE fan of your work---I like to think I'm your biggest fan in Alaska---and I think your various 'scapes are beautifully painted, often EXTRAORDINARILY so. I have a Fave Gallery FULL of your wonderful canvases.Your waterfalls and the way you paint the sunlight on the rapids is just incredible. Your color choices astound me!
...anyway, THANK YOU for your kind message to me. I will continue to collect your fabulous paintings and study your technique and palette choices, because, in terms of landscapes and waterscapes, etc., you are my example of HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE!! ---Ric C.

Hey, congratulations on your new career-to-be! Very nice, friendly humour here. It somehow reminds me of some of the cartoons I used to watch as a kid in the late 80s/early 90s. I'm looking forward to see more.

By the way, if you're interested in some literature about comic making I can recommend The Invisible Art by Scott McCloud. Kind of a long reflection (in the form of a comic!) about what a comic is etc. etc.

Quite humorous this comic is. I like it indeed. I love the colors and backdrops in this illustration; it is all finished so nicely. You have a charming style in drawing comics. As ~TheMarchStudios said, there needs to be more of these types of comics (and webcomics as well) out there. I certainly look forward to more!

Ricky-Roo302 In reply to pearose [2010-11-18 05:53:27 +0000 UTC]

...Thank you for your very kind note. I appreciate your encouragement of what I'm trying to do; there seems to no longer be "funny animal" type of comic strips for the children (and those grown-ups who remain young at heart...) ala Disney or Warner Brothers Bugs and Daffy--- slapstick humor and family friendly situations--- and I for one miss it. I intend to bring humor and charm to my bears, and although my strip is a home-town oriented cartoon (Kodiak), I sure hope it can be embraced by my DeviantArt colleagues--or perhaps their children---as well.
I'm afraid so much of what is passing for "comic" strips on DA is either not even remotely humorous or downright vulgar, and that is a shame. Nor is there any drawing going on; panels and characters are "constructed" with squares, ovals and circles using software programs, and as a result are totally bereft of charm or personality. I'll have no part of that...
...so once again my sincere gratitude to you. Please stand by; I will try as hard as I am capable of to see that BEARY TAILS does not disappoint. ---Ric C.

Yes indeed, I couldn't agree with you more. There just doesn't seem to be any (or many) humorous or family-friendly comics on this site. And those I have seen are so very rare.

With colorful artwork, a very nice style and humorous plots, I am sure your comic will be enjoyed by both children and adults.

I also thank you for watching me! I feel I do not deserve it

That's extremely wonderful to hear, Ric! Cheers!! I'm hopeful that it will be a long running hit!

We need more wholesome, family-friendly comics out there.. so this is really refreshing. The style is something I completely enjoy. Absolutely embodies an old-fashioned feel, a cartoon from the good old days! I love it.

...I do appreciate that Jorge. This strip was my "finding my groove" strip---introducing characters, attitudes, relationships, etc. Basically setting the tone for what is to come. The second chapter is done and being colored, and my line work is much improved and I have also advanced with the writing. I have a feel for it now and I hope to produce some pretty decent cartoon situations....as always, I do appreciate your insightful remarks
