Description Gallery piece i made, 10ft H x 30in W. commentary on social situation in the world or at least in the American world that I know. The pattern on the piece is actually the conceptual content, screen printed in bright blue. In it are symbols of war and destruction, but I have duplicated and arranged them in such a way that if you don’t look closely at them they are just another pretty pattern on a pretty art piece. I created sheets with a monoprint background (monoprint = single edition print, made by inking up a plexi glass slab and using paint thinner and brushes to create the texture I want. I think put paper over the ink and run it through the press transferring the ink to the paper) for those who don’t know the printing process. I then created the fantastical characters fighting each and centered them other on the paper. The characters were etched into copper plates, inked and then pressed. The characters are medieval knights, dragons, lions and so fourth all battling head to head colliding and creating an abstract silhouette that I was hoping would disguise their true identities to the viewer who only looks at works of art for 2 seconds. I then decorated the surroundings with floral elements using a matte medium transfer process. Very fun can do it at home. I took each sheet and secured one under the next to create a sense of scale armor. They were all secured to the wall with a rusted iron plate that I bolted into the wall. I was trying to talk about complacency in our social system. The people are blinded by pretty pictures and superficial information from the mainstream media, but if the people were to look deeper into the images or start researching based on what they see in the news and so fourth they would see a much different picture. But I thought I'd put this up just for fun hope you enjoy looking at it all comment are welcome sorry for the size, thought it the best way to view the whole thing.

It was nice seeing it finished on the wall, but now each section of it is in a different corner of the world with friends and family. maybe I'll make another one for myself one day.

oooh GoooooD, that's beautiful! i'd ask you how you did it, but you keep that secret to yourself and lock it up in the attic. i agree with the tapestry look and feel of it, but mainly i just dig the marks made and the textures. oooohhoahaohoh!!!

Your art is so inspiring! Great job, conceptually excellent. Maybe though, it's a little too pretty...even from up close. I really do think it's successful, but perhaps could have been pushed a little more towards a grittier or more vulgar close up...not that it isn't clear and coherant and amazing already. Because it is.

I just love the patterns and the flow of it. You're clearly very talented and experienced!

I'm also admiring your work with typography immensly. That's always something i've wanted to get into a little more...but alas I have no room for design classes.

Im glad you found it inspiring. everyone in art could use some design or typography classes in my opinion. It gives you a whole new perspective on composition and conceptual approach. I could actually use many more classes in typography, but I would suggest you try to take a class and try it out. Letters can look so beautiful if the designer/artist knows how to use them

lindsie87 In reply to rizn [2006-09-22 05:48:42 +0000 UTC]

agreed! And of course language and script is a huge part of our cultural and social fabric, so there's that weight and significance to it...it isn't just a pretty design. Although I very much like simple aesthetically pleasing things too! haah!!

You know, you're right. If I can find a typogrpahy class, I think i'll take it. I'm doing my bachelor's in five years anyways, so it will work out I think.

wow, I really love the depth of the imagery in this. I think you've really gotten the message across, but it's interesting how you've hidden it, so that only the people who look deeper will find it, the same people who already know that message. The characters were what draw me in at first. I'm surprised there aren;'t more comments on this really great artwork. A fine piece this is.

Oh jeez, this is incredible. I have to admit, the first time I looked at it I just thought that it was a pretty pattern on a pretty piece of art but then I read your comment and it's really opened my eyes. I can see and understand it now and I'm no longer looking at a pretty piece of art, but a true social commentary. It's like I'm reading it instead of seeing it. Great.

glad you saw past the pretty I think most people who viewed the gallery in person walked past it then you'd see all the art students and professors catching the details and looking closer.

Wow. This piece is absolutely amazing, both aesthetically and contextually. I am completely envious of anyone who is able to see this in person. I can't believe the amount of meaning and thought that went into this piece! I can just image looking into an artbook in the future and seeing this in there. Again, amazing job!
