Smart, witty, athletic, brave and beautiful. All words perfectly described Thérèse d'Amboise. Her family was one of the oldest nobles in all of France, ones who survived the turmoil of the French Revolution by acting on behalf of the moderates, and fighting against the extremist Jacobins. As a young girl, Thérèse grew up in le Chateau d'Amboise: her family's seat since the Middle Ages. Her father, Guy d'Amboise, was the wealthy and influential Duke of Touraine, and while the family had no legal status since the French Revolution, they certainly had the means to continue their lavish lifestyle. As the oldest of her six siblings, Thérèse went to the finest lycée in Tours. One day, she took part in a foreign exchange program with her lycée's sister school in New York. That was where she met Ronnie Raymond and befriended him on a field trip to Professor Martin Stein's nuclear power plant. Though she was not pleased by his actions of protesting the plant to impress her, she was impressed by what she saw. Upon returning to France, Thérèse attempted to replicate Professor Stein's attempt to generate electricity via nuclear power. To play it safe, she conducted the experiment in a room with lead-lined walls. However, the experiment was a failure, in part due to the fact that flour particles were present in the air due to an earlier baking mishap. As soon as the radiation hit, the flour in the air ignited, causing an explosion.

But she didn't die, nor did she suffer radiation poisoning. The explosion combined with the nuclear energy transformed Thérèse into France's own nuclear powered girl. At first, she was unsure how to control her newfound abilities to rearrange inorganic matter at the subatomic level, but luckily, she reunited with Ronnie, who now operated as the superhero Firestorm, and he taught her how to control her powers, thus allowing her to become a superheroine herself. She then joined the Teen Titans, fighting alongside Ronnie as Firehawk!

So, I loved what The New 52 did by making Firehawk French, so I decided to go for that, but also to give her a proper backstory to explain why this take on Firehawk is from France. Her outfit was hugely inspired by the one worn by the protagonist in the anime, Birdy the Mighty: Decode. I just removed the top-sleeves and added the Firestorm insignia. You'll notice that emblazoned on each of Firehawk's orbs is the Fleur-de-lis, a heraldic symbol often associated with the Kings of France since the Middle Ages. Thérèse, while using her powers, can project wings made of fire sprouting from her back, with a wingspan as big as the wings of a Thanagarian. However, she and Ronnie can both deactivate their powers. She knows how to fence with an arming sword, rapier and saber, ride a horse and she also loves cooking, reading and especially formal balls, as her family hosts them often at Chateau d'Amboise. Later in life, she and Ronnie got married, and after her father's death, they became the new Duke and Duchess of Touraine. At Titans Academy, Firehawk serves as the school's French teacher, and mentor to students such as Cinder. She also is the faculty mentor of the culinary club, and helps to plan for any formal dances the school has. She's best friends with her fellow members on the Titans East, as well as with Fury, Tsunami, Arsenal, Troia, Nightwing, Starfire, Cyborg and Variant.
