You're thinking of Robin Williams, the movie was done by Richard Williams.

It's okay. It can get people confused by the two.

I just saw the Recobbled Mark 4 (2013) restoration of this movie. Β I'd heard stories about it for years, but I thought it was lost forever. Β It was great to finally see what everyone was talking about.
Although everyone compares this with Aladdin, I think that connection is overblown. Β They are very different in style and attitude. Β You know what The Thief And The Cobbler really reminded me of? Β Wizards! Β Yes, I mean the Bakshi film from 1977.
Even though it was made over a 30 year time span, I definitely got a 1970s vibe from The Thief And The Cobbler. Β Like Wizards, it's an eccentric personal vision in which one man indulged his own whims and preferences (and ego) a bit too much. Β Wizards was never taken away from Bakshi, but it definitely shows the scars of too little budget and too little time, and it's easy to see it wasn't completed or edited the way he wanted. Β Besides that, the army of One Eye invading The Golden Kingdom is practically interchangeable with the army of Black Wolf invading Montegar. Β Wizards also hit theaters at the same time as Star Wars and was crushed by the Star Wars mania. Β Everything was stacked against it.
As for The Thief and the Cobbler... Β Is it a great movie? Β Erm. Β I'm going to say not quite. Β Even if it had been completed as intended, it would have been... Β very good, but probably not the legend it has become from *not* being finished. Β It's a fascinating artifact of animation history, though.

I just love the character designs that Williams did for Zigzag and Tack. They're awesome and surreal at the same time.Β

So much awesomeness! The only way it could be better is if it was based on an actual Arabian Knights story!

I've seen both the Miramax version and the recobbled cut. I like both of them! Jonathan Winters does the thief so well!

Yup. One of the greatest 2-D animations ever made. And then it inspired Tom Moore to make The Secret of Kells, which just added to its greatness.

omg I love this movie! there needs to be more appreciation for this masterpiece. The one with matthew broderick was good, and I love the recobbled cut too c: I showed the movie to my dad once and he was like "wow, disney must've copied everything, even the bird sidekick for zigzag."
anyway, great artwork. the style and the form looks very cool. cross-hatching <3

And here we have another animation legend screwed in the ass by greedy studio executivos, and another hackjob of a movie as a result.
The difference is that the fact that Miramax screwed Richard Williams in the ass is common knowledge, while I seem to be the only one who knows that Paramount screwed Ralph Bakshi in the ass.
And let's give credit where credit is due: "The Thief and the Cobbler" may be a hackjob, but at least it's a watchable hackjob. "Cool World", on the other hand, is nothing short of a mess, a two hour acid trip with nothing resembling a plot. And no amount of "recobbling" is gonna make that movie coherent.

I remember watching one of the shitty versions when I was a kid and thinking it was the stupidest thing. After watching the Nostalgia Critics review of it I watched the Recobbled edition. It was amazing! It is now one of my favorite animated movies. You did a wonderful job capturing the characters and there emotions.

I like your rendition of the characters- Unique, yet recognizable.
Really like the crosshatching too- It gives the piece a whole "stitched" look.
