This is really fantastic. The cracks and details on the teeth are awesome, and the shape's pretty much perfect! I've never worked with plasticine clay, but won't the final product be pretty weighty? And if you don't mind me asking how are you going to attach it to your face if it is?

did you cast it after you made it?
i have glass heads i got at pier one that i sculpt sculpey on
but i cant mass produce the products
how would you cast this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

roxxide In reply to bimbor [2008-10-13 04:20:15 +0000 UTC]

I was unable to cast ths unfortunately. Not because it would be difficult but more about the materials it was sculpted in. But to answer your question, I usually do 2 molds.

1) I use algenate and take that negative and cast it in hydrocal which is kind of like plaster to bot make the second mold easier to deal with and not waste material and to file out any defects and make it a bit smoother.

2) I then use silicon and either fiberglass or ultracal, which is kind of like concrete, to make a "jacket" to keep the silicone in shape then I brush fiberglass inside the mold to make the finished mask.

It's a lot of work but I am usually pretty happy with the end result.

Hope that answers your quesion.

Did you ever cast this to sell? I might want one for Halloween or cosplaying if the price is reasonable.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

roxxide In reply to superErmine [2008-08-28 16:17:34 +0000 UTC]

I couldn't get the mold to work out on this one so the casting was never done. The clay was a bit too old and was reacting to the silicone, making the silicone not cure around the sculpt. So I am a sad panda about this one just because it would have been really awesome.

I plan on making another one exactly if not better than this one but I can't quite find the time to do it with commissions and such.

You may be able to have someone with a lot of casting experience do it for you with the sculpt you already have.

IIRC he's made casts of years-old apoxie sculpts with no problem at all.

roxxide In reply to superErmine [2008-08-29 07:37:52 +0000 UTC]

well the scult was made from a sulfur based clay which doesn't like silicon unless it is coated with something and after I coated it with about 3 or 4 layers of crystal clear, which is what my old SPFX teacher told me to do after I told him about the problem, it still wouldn't work.

Not really much of a big deal the sculpt wouldn't take me too long to remake I just cant get the time to do it.

Wow I love what you've done here... makes me curious to try my own out one of these days. Of course mine would be a custom, why not eh?

I also noticed no one really commented on the piece. XD I love the visualization here... in fact I like it better than the one on the show. I believe I know the character in which this one belongs to. Either way the cracks add a very nice effect. The teeth look realistic yet well done. The jaw and nose line look excellent. =3 Over all a very nice mask and I wouldn't be surprised if others commissioned you for other pieces. Good luck on this one.

Thanks for the comments. heh and your right not a whole lot of people commented on this piece but many have fav'd it. It's always refreshing to hear people dig my work even if it is one of the older pieces.

sure...im still working on the second full Hollow mask right now but I always take commissions for people that would like a custom piece. I am not sure when I would get around to working on it due to AnimeBoston coming up in march and my busy schedule at work but if there is no hurry for it then I would consider it. Just send me a note and lemme know what your looking for, what you price range is, and whatever else.

check out the comment above i think it'll answer any questions. The clay is not real expensive. A 2 lb block will run you about 7 bucks and this mask was maybe half a block

you can maybe find some of it in art supply shops. The big craft places up here like Michaels doesn't carry a lot as far as sculpting materials go I noticed. When you see 8 aisles for scrapbooking it's pretty sad.....so you might be better off checking online. Compleat Sculptor carries a lot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

roxxide In reply to ethersempire [2007-10-22 18:30:03 +0000 UTC]

depends on what you want to make it out of. Some people do the paper mache thing to make quick mask for their cosplay but since i know how to mold and cast these, i can make them out of fiberglass and resin.

I now use a different kind of plasteline clay from the company Chavant which is a lot easier to work with and I used a full head bust from a company called Monster Makers to use as the form then sculpted on the bust.....simple as that. You could probably use the same thing for a paper mache.

I usually grab most of my supplies from The Compleat Sculptor (yes that's how it really is spelled). They have a lot of supplies including tools, stands, and lots of different kinds of mediums plus they sell a lot of videos and books that are really helpful.

hope that helps you out.
