Tikal's not from the comics. She came from the games, specifically Sonic Adventure.
Her backstory goes like this-- 4,000 years ago, there was a strong tribe known as the Knuckles Tribe. The chief was Pachacamac, and his daughter was Tikal. Pachacamac was a man greedy for power, much to Tikal's dismay. He wanted the Chaos Emeralds' power to himself. Tikal swore that greed was the Tribe's worst enemy, but he ignored her, since she was just a "clueless child". Chaos, a water-like beast, was formed by a Chao who was mutated by the Master Emerald. When Pachacamac pushed past Tikal with his men, knocking her down and stomping on all over her, he was greeted by Chaos next to the Emeralds. Chaos most likely killed the men for what they've done while Tikal was out cold.
When Tikal eventually came to, the village was on fire. Everyone was missing. Weakly walking up to the Master Emerald, she begged to have the pain end. To stop Chaos' angry rampage, she sacrificed herself to lock her soul and Chaos into the Emerald permanently.
She was set free at the end of the game. It's likely she finally went to heaven, along with the now gentle Chaos.
