Description Finally I get to introduce a new character who has been giving me some trouble from a design perspective, and the first female character in Exetype's cast - Setsuna, the tanuki.

Extvia and I batted her design back and forth quite a few times, and there were certain hurdles that kept coming up, whether she looked too young, too organic, too boring, and so on. So the colour scheme in particular is still subject to change in the future. This is the look I've settled on for now.

Setsuna Yinaya 750 is one of a rare line of Yinaya-model androids who populate Utopia. They are capable of running on almost any kind of power, because in turn they are shape-shifters who have the ability to transform themselves to suit the enviroment. They hold some power of the celestial race in their programming, originally designed to channel Chi power, making them an important step into the development of the Soul Core technology. In short, they are one of the most important stepping stones to the development of transcending simple artificial life, and turning a synthetic creature into a living being.

Setsuna herself is a woman of many talents who considers herself one of the upper class citizens of Utopia. Her small stature and cute looks leave her with an ambition to appear especially mature in the eyes of her peers, which have lead her to pursue many ambitions. She is known around Utopia as a model and an author, though her true passion is that of a detective. She uses her innocuous appearance and shape-shifting abilities to operate her cases in a unique manner. She loves minimalism and modern design, and carries her 'defaulted' black and white yin-yang themed skin with pride.

She is comissioned by the Police force to track down and identify Ginnigan, though she soon becomes interested in him for personal reasons, feeling that his appearance in Utopia is more significant than it may first appear. She often appears to question him when he least expects it, unintentionally bringing trouble with her.

Though she is a peaceful N-type on the surface, she is quite adept at using her reinforced antique fans as weapons and can shape-shift into a variety of dangerous tools and vehicles, making her a versatile and tricky opponent. Playing as Setsuna will require some thought, though she is fast and compact her regular normals do relatively low damage and lack range. Her transformations limit her mobility and offense, but each one offers a unique method of attacking and grants acess to expanded special moves. Knowing her various states, their strengths and weaknesses, and when to use them will allow her to exhibit strong pressure and check a wide variety of different situations.

No theme tune or character sheet yet. I will be working on those next.

edit: thank you Celix3 for suggesting a better colour scheme. I always did think she looked better with brown, but could never find the right balance enough to keep her shading dark enough so that the yin yang theme was noticable.

I have to say, I really like this characater, the design , and from what you're explaining, she seems to be pretty cool to play too.

The only thing that could be improved , in my humble opinion, is the eye color. It's a bit to close of the character main color, and well, I personally think that eyes helps a lot in the identifaction of the character, not that they have to be extremely unusally colored though.
Again, it's just an opinion.

And gameplay wise, as you said that she has a short attack range, why not giving her a long range attack? A bit like this : [link]
Well, I'm not an expert in fighting game, so I don't know if it would be good.
Consider that as a small suggestion.

Throwing of fans is way too obvious and cliche. Setsuna's fans don't magically act like boomerangs and return to her if she were to throw them. They are just normal battle fans, and if she threw the fans she would be too similar to Mai from KoF conceptually.

there's another reason why a character like this doesn't have a projectile. Generally, if a character has a lot of strong close-range options and mobility to let them get in, they shouldn't have good projectiles.

A good example of this is Cammy from Street Fighter, who doesn't have a projectile at all but sports great movement, or Makoto from Blazblue - who does have a projectile but not one that's really effective for long range combat because she does a lot of damage up close. These types of characters need to lack projectiles for reasons of balance.

Setsuna actually does have a projectile, but in order to use it you need to go into a transformation first, which means it isn't something she can just throw out to pressure full screen without some prior commitment.

So,if I get it right, this way, a character with short range attacks is not too disadvantaged against a character with long range skills

I never really played any fighting game, so I don't really know about this kind of games mechanics.

Characters with short ranged attacks are disadvantaged at a distance, but strong at close range. Long range characters are disadvantaged at close range, but strong at far range.

In a well balanced game, a Ranged character should have to work to keep away from a close ranged character and vice-versa. Both are able to pressure each other but it all comes down to who can control position more effectively.

Close-range characters are usually fast and have good mobility so they can avoid/approach quickly so that they can move into their strength zone with ease. Ranged characters have moves that control a lot of space or punish mistakes across the screen, but tend to be slower and less mobile and vulnerable when an enemy moves beyond their favored range of attack.

Neither should be able to have a huge advantage over the other, unless one character lacks methods of countering the other's skills. An example is in Marvel Vs Capcom 3: Albert Wesker is a close-range character, but he is able to teleport to get around projectiles. The Hulk is also a close-range character, but cannot teleport and is a really big target. Naturally, the Hulk is a lot more disadvantaged than Wesker should they come up against a ranged character (but makes up for it by just hitting really darn hard)

If a character has a strong point, they've got to have a weakness, that's usually the intention. It doesn't always work out that way, but I feel that kind of balance is what's good to aim for when designing a fighter.

I see... a strong point and a weakness.

But, now I think that the hardest thing will be balancing the characters to make them all enjoyable to play against any other character.

Right, well aside from Mortal Kombat being probably my least favorite fighting game franchise both aesthetically and for it's rather awful competitive design, I can't say I would have even considered Kitana as an inspiration at all. Next time you post, try to leave something constructive other than just saying x character reminds you of x character.

It makes sense that her being a tanuki could do what she can do. I love her character design, she's simply beautiful. I think you should keep her colors, although the yellow seems sorta.. odd. But I'm not fond of yellow so maybe that's why. rofl

I really like her story, especially the detective part. I love detectives. They remind me of Batman. xD Keep up the good work! I can't wait to see her animated sprite.
