Description Oil on canvas with palette knives
60x 80cm

We went on a boat ride out onto the lake in front of Udaipur Palace (Rajasthan, India) one evening, just before a monsoon storm hit. This is a painting of a photo we took, just as the storm clouds gathered in the distance. It was so so beautiful but terrifying at the same time.

Unfortunately the camera has warped the picture slightly, so it appears the sky and the water are not straight in the painting, when in fact, they are.

Simple words, like `brooding` and `menace` come to mind, but these do not really do this magnificent painting justice. There is definitely an air of impending doom, and the fear you mention in the summary is palpable. Wonderful, and, by the way, I didn`t notice the bent eye-line until you pointed it out, so stop it at once! Just say "..the far shoreline appears to be bending towards the anger of the imminent low pressure weather system...". So, there!

That is splendidly assured and very lovely, but I can't help wondering if you weren't tempted to correct the camera's distortion?

Do you mean digitally? In the real painting, all is straight, its just as I took the photo of the piece, the photo of the painting became distorted. Funnily enough, my iphone photos are not distorted, but my husband's big fancy SLR lens bent it all.

Oh! I thought you meant that you had slavishly copied an original distorted photograph of the scene. I do apologise. That would have been silly.

Somehow, the fact that a second photograph was involved completely escaped me... despite the fact that I only took a photo of a painting earlier this evening :-S

This type of distortion (I think it might be called spherical aberration) plagues me and my little compact digital, too. It is most pronounced with wide angle lenses - think of a fish-eye lens.

no worries, I should have been more clear. I will look into spherical aberration and try to rectify it - thanks!

Thanks for checking out the blog! Look forward to seeing more of your work on DA!
