Description
Shadow and Boomslang made their way back towards the battle. Up ahead they thought they could hear the occasional cries of a wounded dragon. They picked up the pace. The cries got louder until, bursting through the undergrowth, they came upon not a dragon, but a wyvern.
"Mind out, I'll kill it," said Shadow, moving towards it.
"No!" replied Booms. "He's wounded; I should treat him."
"Treat him? But he's the enemy," objected Shadow.
"Enemy or not, I took a vow to preserve life whenever I could," said Booms quietly, unsure how best to approach it. Shadow watched on with interest. After a few moment's hesitation she stepped forward and started to check his injuries. Suddenly the wyvern tensed and screamed. It kicked out a leg and then went silent and still. Booms looked round and immediately saw the cause of it's sudden demise.
"You killed him!" she gasped.
"Of course I did; he's the enemy and I’m not bound by your morality," replied Shadow coldly. Booms looked at him, disappointed. As they started to walk away Shadow noticed Booms quietly starting to cry.
"Are you crying because I killed that wyvern?" he asked calmly.
"No," she replied. "I’m crying because secretly I hoped you would."
They walked along in silence for a while. Boomslang started to feel uncomfortable.
“Are you mad at me for trying to help the enemy?” she finally asked.
“No,” replied Shadow. “You did what you felt you had to do.” He stopped and looked at her.
"You're too good for this place Booms," he said quietly.
"Don't ever change. When this war is over we're going to need good dragons like you to teach the rest of us how not to hate."
