I use a layer style called "luminosity", I'm not sure if GIMP has an equivilent. It could be called "add", I believe photoshop has a layer type called add that completes the same function as luminosity. If Gimp has it it may work

I almost got it... It changed its color, but that almost transparent part to the bottom of that blue...did you get it just by addition?

I used a blur tool for the fade, you could also use an eraser with a soft edge but i prefer blur

for the colour brightness on the bottom I use an overlay layer, and the top highlights luminosity layer
