Recently I've been working on stuff to include in my folio, and found this awesome sketch/collection of 100 character concepts [link] here on DA while looking for some inspiration; that was inspired by a video Mark Molnar had posted on character development (which can be found here [link] ).I tried it out for myself too and it really is a great way to get started with the character designing process (many thanks to both these artists).
I wanted to fill an A3 page but keep them fairly large when printed so I could flesh 'em out a little more, and so I ended up with 39 characters on the page

I love this concept! Fast and furious and you get so many interesting shapes, silhouettes and character types out of it in one short session! It's easy to see correlations between some of them and you begin to see a culture emerging from them. Great exercise to go through as you never know when you'll need some background characters to drop into a scene too. I'm interested if you took any of these and fleshed it out further? Thanks so much for posting the link from Mark Molnar too! Very educational.

These are great. Each one is developed and unique. Love the style too.
I feel for you with the portfolio too. A good artist only sees what needs to be in their portfolio, not whats actually there.

awesome stuff
dang, what a cool way to brainstorm character designs. They all look so detailed... *stares* I find number 14 strangely compelling... it makes me think of the desert. Ooooo and 39's fascinating... not to mention 36... and actually they're all rather cool. *stares more* the more closely you look at them the more interesting each one seems.
