Description This is the finished version of one of the two final projects I did in art ap this year.. ([link] is the WIP without the background)
I'm not entirely sure if the green was a good idea (the picture was taken inside on carpet) but I wanted something to fit her personality, and bright green suits it well; she's crazy. basically.
So tell me what you think; is the background a hit or a miss? I'm rather undecided, and I'd love to hear your opinions

I often forget that vivid, bright colors can convey as much realism as muted yet more natural tones. You have an eye for observing exactly the details and using the right colors to make an image look like a photo.
I will be honest with you though, the painting looks better in small view. Full view is great if you're interested in observing the brush strokes and making an idea of how the whole thing was painted, but also brings out some irregularities (such as the fact that the grass was painted in a bit of a rush, with limited effort).
The painting does have potential though

I love using bright colors in realism, I find they sometimes make things more real, less flat, than neutral colors.
I used oil pastels, so the "strokes" are a big part of the media, and one of my favorite parts of it. I usually don't strive for photographic reality, but a sort of edited, artistic reality, and seeing the lines that make an image, which sort of deconstruct it, are of real interest to me.. Sort of Saville-esque? I do agree with you on the background.. It started as just a green tone, and evolved into a sort of "grass." I HATE backgrounds to be honest, so I didn't really work on it too much, perhaps I should revisit it. At the same time, though, I don't want it to be too detailed and draw too much attention away from the subject, but it seems that it was distracting to you BECAUSE it was so rushed.
Thanks for the critique, perhaps I will go back and work this more some day!!

I think the background is a hit :] It looks a lot like grass, so that's probably what most people are registering it as. My eyes see the green, think cool, then look at the main subject so i don't think it takes away any. I love how you added purple and green into the dog, it really makes the colors stand out in a good way i think. it all mixes together so well i think

Not to mention her expression! you said the green was a great way to describe her personality, pair that together with the expression you painted and i think we get a good representation of you dog

Great point of view.
If you have a dog and watch down, you can be sure to see that expression ^___^
I think the green background helps to give the right depth.

I like the green, good contrast with the darks and also brings out the little splashes of purple that you used. also makes me think she is about to tear off into the park and is looking back to ask "play now?"
