I love using bright colors in realism, I find they sometimes make things more real, less flat, than neutral colors.
I used oil pastels, so the "strokes" are a big part of the media, and one of my favorite parts of it. I usually don't strive for photographic reality, but a sort of edited, artistic reality, and seeing the lines that make an image, which sort of deconstruct it, are of real interest to me.. Sort of Saville-esque? I do agree with you on the background.. It started as just a green tone, and evolved into a sort of "grass." I HATE backgrounds to be honest, so I didn't really work on it too much, perhaps I should revisit it. At the same time, though, I don't want it to be too detailed and draw too much attention away from the subject, but it seems that it was distracting to you BECAUSE it was so rushed.
Thanks for the critique, perhaps I will go back and work this more some day!!

Great point of view.
If you have a dog and watch down, you can be sure to see that expression ^___^
I think the green background helps to give the right depth.

I do think the green fits! It contrasts nicely and adds to the playful mood.

I like the green, especially with the other bit of green that you added in her eyes, which plays off the background.
