I was! One of my friend once told me: "Would like to hold my pet?"
I said: "Yes."
And he put on my hand a tarantula! Not a cute one...Β Β

This is a problem visitors to Australia encounter. Most of our larger spiders are harmless. It is the smaller ones that cause problems.

Like the huntsman spider- massive thing that plaps around all fun like and then funnel web spider- little jerk that gets in your shoe and sends you to the hospital, same with red backs- could it be safer to not wear shoes or garden gloves? lol

Thems the beasties.Β
I rarely wear gardening gloves, but if I'm heading in to the bush I feel like hiring an encounter suit.
My record was picking up 76 tics at one time.Β  Itchy.Β

Wow where I mostly go in the States is a flood plain, so not too many ticks to worry about, but I think the most on me at once was four.

They are all too many, and too durable... I once put one in a cup of acetone and lit it on fire and the next day it was like nothing happened to it Β Β Β ... They are little tanksΒ Β Β

lol. True. We put a drop of Tea-Tree oil on them and cover with a band aid, and take it off a couple of hours later. The tic is dead, and if it does not come off with the Band-Aid, it is easily removed with tweezers.
When I had the 76 on board, they were round my waste, so we soaked a roller bandage in Tea0Tree oil and wrapped it round me. I itched like hell, but smelled nice.Β

Yeah at that point I would probably light myself on fire... Oh wait... Β Β

Thanks! good to know a new way to get them off easily, beats pulling them off and possibly losing their mouthparts in me... I can imagine the itch, ticks are the worst.

My pleasure.
Any medicinal oil would do, as it is just to suffocate them. We use Tea-Tree because it is also an antiseptic.

Suffocation seems like it would take a while, about how long does that usually take? Also I kinda feel like getting some Tea-Tree for my trauma kit now, I had no idea the benefits

firefysh1140 In reply to SchroSurgeon [2017-05-05 14:04:39 +0000 UTC]

I usually leave it on for a couple of hours, or even overnight, although an hour would probably do it.
Tea-Tree oil is a must in our first-aid kit.

I used to be terrified of them. But i now have a very good appreciation for them and have come to actually like them.

These spiders (wolf spiders) are very docile, I actually picked this one up and it did not try to bite. Not many people know that spiders do not like to bite unless provoked, I wish more did.

KadeeLark In reply to SchroSurgeon [2017-05-03 03:54:44 +0000 UTC]

It would be better for them.
I kept a hecklemesh weaver as a pet. She was very docile and calm. Most spiders will bite if manhandled. Otherwise they don't usually. Except a few more aggressive apecies but luckily they aren't common.

SchroSurgeon In reply to KadeeLark [2017-05-03 04:01:06 +0000 UTC]

I haven't had one as a pet but held a bunch of wild ones (carefully). It's probably for the best the aggressive species aren't too common.
