Didn't actually take many photos during the actual process, but I hope this helps everyone that's thinking about cosplaying Doc Scratch.

So you need to just turn your helmet around for photos but walk with the rectangle of unpainted part in the front?

I think I found the globe you used. The only review is about how well it worked for a costume so it's probably a safe bet.

I don't know if it's the globe this person used, but it's certainly the one I used; that's my review.

Where did you get the globe?

How, exactly, does it work for you to get the correct look without noticeable eyeholes, or is that just in pictures?

I'm thinking about being Doc Scratch for my next con, but I, personally, don't see how unpainted bits in a clear globe are going to appear white.

That is me. I'm science. And I question everyone and everything.

and i had a question, if i purchase a clear globe and paint them, would my eyes be showing where i left the view strip?

This sometimes happens, but what matters is whether or not people can see your face when it's flipped around for a photo

wait so were you able to see out of the globe prior to painting and thats why you taped over it or did you cut out a hole in the globe? i cant tell if that's tape or your nose

Twighlight-Maiden [2012-06-23 01:13:21 +0000 UTC]

okay so because of the viewing strip thing, you can see? like, on the outside it just looks solid white but on the inside you can actually see out at people?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchTheMan In reply to Twighlight-Maiden [2012-07-05 06:18:46 +0000 UTC]

Yup! To be honest the way I have mine set into the helmet makes it to where I can only stare down at people's feet and I have to tilt backward to look into their faces.

Honestly, it's become common practice among scratch cosplayers to simply keep their helmets off unless their taking a photo (which I usually end up doing because when I'm not getting a photo taken I'm busy busy busy).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchTheMan In reply to nekokyuuketsuki [2012-01-12 19:13:20 +0000 UTC]

In total it was about $90, the bulk of the cost being the globe itself (at 70-80 dollars)

oneAWKWARDbird [2011-11-25 07:50:00 +0000 UTC]

the ONE THING that keeps bugging me about this is the viewing strip. So the globe starts out clear, you apply the tape, and then paint over it--wouldn't that leave a clear strip blatantly visible after removing the tape? i'm sorry if it's obvious but i just don't see how the surface somehow looks visibly opaque in your results.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchTheMan In reply to oneAWKWARDbird [2011-12-02 07:09:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes. It would leave a strip visible. You turn the globe around for photos. But if you just want to wear it, you can keep the strip forward.

Where did you get that leather headcase? I've done all manner of google searches but haven't found anything resembling whats in the picture. I have tons of foam so I'm not worried about that.

I would like that the headcase would be something from, let's say, a bicycle helmet! That's what I'm planning on using.

Oh well, I guess I'll figure out something to use. Great tutorial btw. I was planning on buying a white globe and cutting out a window lined with white wire mesh, but this makes more sense.

I'm a little confused. Where is the viewing strip in your final photos? Do you rotate it to the back of your head for photos and then rotate it back to the front when you have to walk/see?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

ScratchTheMan In reply to Iyou [2011-11-15 06:44:41 +0000 UTC]

Yep, I rotate the thing before photos.

Have you tried some kind of white fabric for over the viewing port?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchTheMan In reply to WolfDeityProductions [2012-04-04 07:36:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes and even the thinnest fabrics like Organza leave me with a misty vision and a very poor streamlined white effect.

Flipping it about has served me well thus far.

Mishiika [2011-09-25 06:42:03 +0000 UTC]

Okay, call me clueless, but...I can't figure out how you made the head-hole for it. x_x
It looks like you cut it, but how do you figure out what size/what do you use to cut it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

ScratchTheMan In reply to Mishiika [2011-10-03 04:26:36 +0000 UTC]

To add to Phantom's post, I ordered my globe with a pre-set 5'inch hole and drilled around said hole until it fit my head.

I don't think you can buy a globe without a pre-cut hole, but if you can then DON'T. If you try making your own hole without having a pre-cut base to work off of you'll run the risk of splitting the globe apart or cracking it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Phantom-Shadow In reply to Mishiika [2011-10-02 18:50:47 +0000 UTC]

doesn't log on often. I'm talking to him and figured I'd help you out.

The size of the hole varies on the person. Use a plastic cutting dremmel to cut out the hole in the bottom of the globe.(Make sure to wear a mask and be safe. It's toxic.) Start with a hole that is around 6 inches across in diameter. (You can make the hole bigger if this is too small. (Though, you don't want to make it to big or you will loose the globe effect.) If you can find out the circumference of your head by some manner then you can take that and trace it down onto the globe. (I hope that helps somewhat?)
