Description Diopsittaca Nobilis Cumanensis

These are some of the most common birds in the woodlands of eastern Bolivia, although relatively rare elsewhere. They're noisy things, too; it's impossible to go anywhere without hearing them conversing in the trees...

Aw, cute composition! I like - my frustration with many bird pictures is that they lack any sense of... mood, I suppose, and this manages to have a lovely dash of quirk in it. Nice work.

Really beautiful birds! I'm jealous of the experience you're having, but really enjoy the pictures. The shades of green in this make it interesting, but I sort of feel like the plant dominates the photo. At the same time, that makes the birds feel like a discovery, so it's all up to artistic interpretation.

I as a matter of fact was not too keen on this photo, but a lot of people seemed to like it, so I put it up... I know what you mean. It's all in the way you see it.

Well where I lived in Michigan, there aren't any at all! This is taken in the countryside, there aren't nearly as many in the big city.

I used to have a pair of these birds when I was in high school... Mr. Bird and Ruckus, and they were awesome.

Really? Judging by the names, I assume they weren't the quietest things in the world...

wynnesome In reply to sebastopolgoose [2010-02-10 22:00:54 +0000 UTC]

Not always! Mr. Bird was the sweetest bird ever, and Ruckus was feisty. I had the pleasure of getting to know her over the years till she became more gentle and enjoyed getting her head scratched, but would still turn around and nip you sometimes!

I like this photograph, especially the many greens.

I don't like the large foreground because I find my gaze is drawn towards the rib of the plant frond, toward the broken section (lower left) and toward the brown blur (bottom right), away from the birds.

I suggest that you try placing the tip of the frond rib into the bottom right corner and cropping everything below.

The top or side could then be shaved a tiny amount to yield a square image.

I think this would establish the focal point solidly on the birds.

Thanks for the critique! I wasn't entirely sure what the correct crop would be, because I'm terrible with critiquing my own images. So I decided to go with the Rule of Thirds, just because that felt like the safe thing to do. I'll experiment with that. My only worry is that this is already a sort of heavy crop, so hopefully there's enough resolution.

I'll let you know what happens

lightrae In reply to sebastopolgoose [2010-02-10 21:17:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it is interesting to try different cropping but one must limit the degree of cropping in the final version.

Your photograph is a nice image of this species in a natural scene.
I think that you have done a good job with it.
