Did it sting when it bit you? I'm curious.

When corn snakes bite you, it usually doesn't hurt. I have one of these little guys and I was bitten once when I first got him. Their jaws are strong for their size and their teeth are relatively short, but it's a harmless bite. It's just a little nibble when they feel threatened or bored :3 And they will never try to hurt you, don't worry. When you own a snake you kinda get what they're thinking.

Gardner snakes don't actually have teeth right?

Gartersnakes do have teeth-very sharp little teeth.

But aren't they farther back in their mouth?

I have had MANY of those days! Especially with wild garters I have come across. Some are nice but others just not happy campers at all! What I think is worse is when they spray you with poo. I'd rather get bit by them then be sprayed!

Oh and they actually are venomous. But they have a very mild venom that doesn't usually harm people unless you have an immune system problem. Garters are rear fanged and they chew in their venom. Similar to a Hog nose snake.

I've been following the studies of Dr Bryan Fry in Australia on the venomous "non-venomous" snakes-his studies and findings are fascinating.

I contacted him a few times-such smart and sweet man!

When I use the term non-venomous I'll actually referring to non-problematic species.

Personally-I have been bitten by both gartersnakes and hognose snakes and had less reaction-if any-to hognose snakes (in feed mode)--but that rear fang sure does hurt! this of course prompted my questions for Dr Fry.

The bite of a Flying Snake was pretty interesting with unexpected results-I'm a bite magnet I guess.

Oh ok I see now. Does this guy have a website? I would love to check this out myself. I know of someone that was told never to handle a garter b/c they are allergic to bees..I wonder if that really holds any water?

Yeah I seem to have the same effect on naughty snakes! Can't even count on my hands how many times I have been bitten by garters. I've been "lucky" ...knock on wood...with the hoggies so far so I can't say if I will have a reaction to them yet. But seeing as I don't with the garters I prob will be ok if/when one does manage to tag me.

What happened with the Flying snake when it bit you?

He does indeed

I think-not sure-but I've heard that too. It never hurts to be safe.

Let me put my bite magnet thing out this way-Rosy Boas are known not to bite--I have some love painful photos of bites from the 2 I had--they would be climbing on my hands then get like sniffing abut and then chomp down-small but powerful bite-bloody mess they would make of me!

I once made a list of things that have bitten me (and tried)-it's too long to list here. LOL!

The Flying Snake bite felt like someone shot Novocaine into my hand near the bite site. It lasted for several hours. There was no swelling or anything more serious than that. He was a small one-if he had been a large one...???

Thanks for that link. Sorry it took me a while to get back to you...trying to catch up on stuff.

Lets see for things that have bitten me: garter snakes, my Children's python, ball pythons, milk snakes, horned frogs (and they HURT), white's tree frogs...but of course they don't hurt...they just thought my finger was food.

That is interesting about the Flying snake bite. was thinking that maybe if it was a larger snake the bite might not have been as bad. Sometimes larger snakes give either dry bites or not as much venomous b/c they know that sometimes it's just the bite itself that is enough. That is an interesting reaction too...with no swelling. But god I hate Novocaine! Especially in the mouth!

Actually, not sure if you know but I've read that all snakes are venomous to a certain extent. In the case of the garter snake (and other 'non-venomous snakes' though, we're talking about to the point of only being slightly irritating.

seto2112 In reply to adventbahamut [2010-01-09 01:13:45 +0000 UTC]

Some have not yet been identified as having any venom-like properties, such as kingsnakes. But most other colubrids have something similar to venom in the saliva produced by the Duvernoy's gland. I have had some pretty interesting reactions to Garter Bites myself-one which required a steroid shot at the hospital. So it does happen.

I actually did some research on that subject after the above bite. I still have the photos too.

There seems to be a collation because a friend of mine who has been bitten too many times by vipers is now so allergic and sensitive that if a garter bites him-he could die.

Garters can be so fiesty, XD
I found a baby ribbon snake out back that latched onto me like so. He had no intentions of letting go; I walked around with him for about five minutes.

mistieredpanda [2009-09-12 19:07:19 +0000 UTC]

worse than the bite.... the musky stink they let off or the vomiting of their last meal when they're overly stressed by capture/handling.

I just giggle when things with little teeth try to let us know they have every intention of defending themselves ^_^;

I was just bitten by a yellowjacket--not stung mind you-how annoying is that!

XD yes! Long lasting like banana slug slime

I'd rather the curious nibble over the aggressive sting any day!

It tried so hard-but it didn't hurt at all. Hence me taking a photo while being bitten. The first Garter I've seen all summer which is unusual-and what does it do....

LOL! I used to play with (alligator?) lizards, and when they'd bite me, it felt so weird. Didn't really hurt, felt more like a hard pinch.

Yeah have bled from Garter bites-even had the "non-venomous/venomus" bite from one" it happens when they have just eaten something with annoying skin toxins like Pickeral Frogs.
