Description Many children, as they are growing up, enjoy summer nights catching fireflies.

I did not. I grew up in a desert. If there are fireflies in Arizona, I sure never saw them.

So, since I live in Pennsylvania now (where I believe the firefly is the state insect), and there are thousands of them in the field next to my house, I've been enjoying them very, very much. Yes, I am a grown woman who chases fireflies.

For this painting, I did a lot of study both out in the field and of cute little buggies I caught and put in a jar. I even held some of them gently in my hand to look at to get the details right. I did layering of silver paint and non-metallic blue and purple paint to do the sky. It took me a long time to get it how I wanted it. The leaves depicted are those of a raspberry bush.

Acrylic on 5 x 7 canvas.

When I moved to PA, I noticed the fireflies and thought I was going mad! I'd see a blip of light, and it'd be gone!

OMFG! ALIENS ARE ABDUCTING ME!!!!!!!!

*screams down the highway*

Ooooh man!

Last year, on the move here, I saw my first fireflies when we hit Virginia. We were looking for our hotel (darn Maps and Streets had some things listed oddly), evening was setting in, and I saw a spark on someone's lawn. I craned my neck further out the U-Haul window to get a better look because I thought there was a fire somewhere on the lawn or someone's electrical equipment was shorting out or something. I saw a few more sparks of light, and seeing no fires or problems, it suddenly dawned on me. I practically shouted.

"OMG! FIREFLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

And, I thought they were the coolest things ever.

And I still do. I chased some around outside my yard tonight and have a few temporary prisoners in a salsa jar in my bedroom. Heee.

Good Times!
I remember catching fireflies and putting them in Peanut Butter jars! And I never harmed them, but it seemed that half of them I cought had broken bulbs.....
I've heard them called Fireflies, Lightning Bugs, Blippers, and Blinker Bugs before!

I really like your use of color on this, and how you made the wings look so nicely blurred with motion! I can also see all the detail you put into the fireflies' body, and you studied it very well, in my opinion. Bugs are hard to draw!

And I think chasing fireflies is worthwhile too, though I'm old enough to know better as well ^^ I'm definitely looking forward to seeing my first firefly. The frigid north just isn't firefly country...I think their little blinkers would get frozen! Ah well...if they won't come to me, I'll have to go to them!
